Ditchingham Cemetery - Brock.

I regularly visit Ditchingham cemetery. I have noticed some folk on Rootschat are interested in the surname Brock. In the cemetery I pass a grave stone which says:-

In Affectionate Remembrance.  (around top in large letters).

Henry Brock who departed this life suddenly December23rd  1882 age 81 years.

The fear of the Lord prolongeth days Prov.x.27.  (Proverbs 10:7).

                   ------------

Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. Ps.cxl.  (Psalm 140:13).

Also  Elizabeth Brock wife of the above who departed this life June 4th 1891 age 65 years.

Her end was peace.

The writing is remarkably preserved. I did take some photos but they didn’t come out very well. It was an exceedingly hot day, and the stone had a dappled effect from the trees above. If the grave is of interest to anyone, I’ll have another go, perhaps one morning!

Thanks for that, Mary. I am interested in the Brocks. Henry is one of my mysteries. I know he married twice and that William Brock was his father. But can't find much more.  I did not have his death, so that's another useful little bit of information!

I've just noticed - Henry was baptised in the Wesleyan chapel, Bungay (which might explain the lack of records on his family - non-conformists seemed not to care about family trees and were often careless in recording information!)

I assume he is buried in a CofE churchyard?

The cemetery, although opposite the church, is the Parish cemetery, the church doesn't have any responsibility for it . Around the church there are graves but that is now full up. So presumably they lived in Ditchingham. In the records for Ditchingham his death was not there I noticed.

Wesleyan chapel is now closed.

Thanks, Mary, again. One can so easily assume things! I, too, have been through the Ditchingham PRs and not found his death. Hence my pleasure that you  gave us the info. found on his grave.

Am I right in deducing that you're Auntie Amy's daughter?! I'm Lucy (granddaughter of Jean and Rex). I'm interested in the Irish side of the family - can you tell me anything about them? I got John O'Neill and Alice Vyce, but got confused because I wasn't sure if John O'Neill of Colchester Barracks in the 1901 census was the same person, because his birthplace is listed as Ireland, and I thought the O'Neills emigrated earlier... Anyway, get in touch if you really are my dad's cousin, and if you aren't then apologies!

Hello Lucy,

What a nice surprise! I am indeed your Dad’s cousin!  John O’Neill is not on the 1901 census he was in South Africa involved in the Boer War. My Grand-father John, your Great Grand-father was born in London. Your Dad has a brief print out of the tree.

Alice Vyce is John’s first wife, she died of TB age 27 years. Buried in Holton. John then married Amy Vyce, my Grand-mother . Alice was Amy’s Aunt. It gets a bit complicated!  I have all the certificates, so don’t buy any! It would be best if you emailed me, your Dad has my address.  You can’t send a Personal Message until you have done 3 items.
