1861 Look Up Workington Cumberland
« on: Thursday 31 March 05 13:28 BST (UK) »
Could someone please help me find my paternal great Grandmother, Letitia Sophia Davis (or Davies).  In 1868 she married my great Grandfather Joseph Whitfield in Workington.

She gave her address as Bridge Street, Workington and her father as Edward Davis, Cabinet Maker, deceased.

In 1868 she gave her age as 19 but I believe she was a child bride and probably born around 1854, therefore around 14.  Either way she should have been around on the 1861 Census.

Thanks for any help.

I've searched the 1861 index but not found - looked for Let* Dav* and Sop* Dav*, so should match most variations unless the indexing is really blundered.

I had a thought - do you know if Edward died before the 1861 census? Further, if his widow married again?

I have once or twice seen children appear under step-father's name on the census, then use their "real" name later in life - in fact one sees names change for all sorts of reasons - but I'm probably clutching at straws here...

Sorry to not be much help...

Hello Steve
Thank you so much for your efforts, I think I can now probably rule out the fact that the was in the Workington area in 1861, trouble is I can't correctly identify her in the Welsh area either !  I have no idea who her mother was, and also no idea when her father Edward died - in fact she is a complete mystery.  There are so many variations of the name Letitia (with two t's), Lateel (various spellings) Lettice (various spellings) I'm at a complete loss.  So it's back to the drawing board for me !  I'm grateful for your assistance.  Regards, Pauline

I can't find her in Welsh census either - I think you have a toughie here!

There is a possible entry on the IGI but it's just a patron batch (not indexed from original records):

Letticia DAVIS b. 11 Feb 1854, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales; d. 3 Sep 1925. Father Edward DAVIS.

That's all... maybe you know her death date and whether it matches the above?

Steve
Thanks for your second message, grateful for your help.  Yes I have seen the Patron entry for Letitia, a few years ago the address of the Patron was on the site and I corresponded with him, his wife was Letitia's daughter from her second marriage.  He sent me a lot of information which he had put on the LDS site, most of it completely wrong, when I wrote back to him (very diplomatically) pointing out his errors I never heard from him again !  But, I have just written him a letter asking if he has Letitia's birth. cert from 1854 so will let you know !  I have spent hours on the 1861 and the 1837 site looking for her and have now decided enough is enough - she obviously doesn't want to be found, it's very difficult as her age changes quite a bit.  1868 on marriage she was 19, 1871 she was 20, 1881 27, 1886 on second marriage 32, 1891 37, 1901 47 and if the Patron entry for her death in 1925 is to be believed 75.
I notice that you live in Australia - if you ever come across a Joseph Whitfield born 1848 Workington, Cumberland to a John and Mary Whitfield (nee Beeby) please remember me !  He was Letitia's first husband (they were married Workington 1868), they are together on the 1871 census but she is living with another Whitfield with a small family on the 1881 and Joseph is nowhere to be found, nor can I find a death.  I know he was around 1875 as the eldest child living with Letitia on the 1881 is his son.  He  had a brother William in Australia so I suspect joined him but my efforts to find him in Australia have also failed.
If you don't have all the census for England I have a sub. to Ancestry so happy to help you out.
Kind regards, Pauline
