pontypridd families,king and pollock
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 16:48 BST (UK) »
hi, i am a new poster on this forum and if possible i would like some help or information regarding my grandmother
her name was annie mary pollock nee king she was married in pontypridd in 1911 to james pollock
james died fairly young and the children of the marriage were placed into a childrens home among them was my father
we have recently found out that annie may have been living in barry when she died in the mid 1950s though all our searches drew a blank when trying to match up date of birth which was 1891 and age at death which we believe was 65, she may have remarried and died with different surname though family connections think it unlikely
she did have a number of siblings according to the 1901 census,the address for them in the census is 122 coedpenmaen rd
any help or information would be appreciated by myself and my dutch cousins
hope someone can assist me

Don't know if I can help but..

A few questions for you.

You say Annie and James married in 1911 in Pontypridd. The only marriage I can find in that year and area is for a James Pollock to a Pollie King. Is this their marriage?

Do you have their marriage cert?

What do you know about James, birth date, place etc.

Have you looked for them in the 1911 census?

Did they stay in the Pontypridd area and have children - I noticed some children births in the area after 1911 that may possibly have been theirs.

hello petercat
thanks for your prompt reply
the marriage that you have found is the one that we have and assumed that this must be the one - we have the marriage cert and the details on the cert match the father's name, road name and one of the witnesses appears to be a brother of the bride which appears on the 1901 census
jame's birth date is 1891 and he died early in 1921.  the children, all born in pontypridd, were James Crawford, Thomas Cameron, Ivor Stirling and Mary Pollock, we know the history of all of the children - all now deceased - but our problem is Annie Mary/Polly? we cannot trace her death tho we now believe she possibly died in Barry. after the father's death the three brothers were placed into one children's home, but don't know where and the daughter was placed in another home.
thanks again for your interest

Annie and James are an elusive pair I must say.

I searched for them in the 1911 census but couldn't find them. Also searched for a remarriage and death for Annie. Would really like to find them in 1911 to see what name Annie is using.

So a few more questions for you.

The James Pollock who died in 1922 had the middle inital C. Do you know what that stood for? In case he's using his middle name in the census. Also what was his father's name on the marriage cert?

Are these the children?

Births Jun 1911
~~~~~~~~
Pollock  James C    Pontypridd  11a 648
Births Jun 1913
~~~~~~~~
Pollock  Thomas C  King  Pontypridd  11a 1062

Births Jun 1916
~~~~~~~~
Pollock  Ivor S  King  Pontypridd  11a 1189
Births Mar 1919
~~~~~~~~
Pollock  Louisa M  King  Pontypridd  11a 825

Did a brief WW1 record search for James but there are quite a number of them, which is why I asked about the middle initial. By the way, slightly off topic, now but I think I came across a WW2 record for son Ivor Pollock.

It seems like I'm asking a lot of questions about all the family except Annie - it just helps to build a picture of her. I came across one marriage for an Annie M Pollock in 1927 but that was in Devon - so doubtful.

I'll have another search later.

jame's middle name is crawford and his father's name was Thomas Pollock.
the children's names are correct except for the daughter which is mary louisa.
ivor s was killed in action in May 1940.
will have a look at the annie m pollock record in 1927 - could be a possibility, many thanks for your help

 just a bit more information,have managed to trace annie and james in the 1911 census by using an address from their wedding certificate ,the reason their names were not showing was a error in the reading of the census form they were down as jane  crawford potlock and annie mary potlock,however we have made no progress in finding annies death details but will keep on trying

Looks like you have made good progress.

Perhaps this is not much use to you but I searched for deaths for an Annie Mary Midgley (also Annie M Midgley) but drew a blank for Wales. Also searched for deaths using wildcards in the surname - m*l*y -  and no first name for all deaths between 1945 and 1965 in Glamorgan.

How sure are you that she died in Barry?

Closest I could find of the right age (born around 1891) were ....

Annie M Midgley, age 60, death date 1951 Dec Nottingham Nottinghamshire 3c 359
(should be age 61 if born in 1891)

Annie M Midgley, age 69, death date 1961 Dec Littleborough Lancashire 10d 86
(should be age 70 if born in 1891)

Hopefully you will find her.

Thank you very much for your efforts on our behalf.  We have contacted our dutch relatives who seem to remember a 2nd marriage which didn't last too long for whatever reason so we are thinking she may have reverted to her maiden name of King and so are now looking at records under that name  there are a couple of possibilities which we will try to follow up

thanks again
