Dundee
« on: Wednesday 14 July 10 02:50 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find my husbands ancestors who came from Dundee. George Taylor born approx 1785 married Ann Campbell born 1785 approx. They married in Dundee in 1807. They then moved to Woolwich England where George was in the Royal Artillery. The only George I can find for a birth is from Montrose, is that near Dundee? The other part of my question is, was it common for men from Scotland to travel to England and join the army? Is it possible to get birth detail on line for these 2 and where do I go.

if this is your man then it would seem he joined the army before he married and went to england
i have 2 ancestors who lived in forfar(just to the north of dundee) who joined
the royal artillery about the same time
find my past website is adding british army records at the moment but have not got this far back yet

if you have not done so already you might want to post on the armed services
board to see if there is a chance he's on the waterloo medal roll or the MSG
(general service) roll

Hello Jan,
My name is James (Jim) Patterson. I am new to roots chat so not quite sure how it works. I noticed an earlier query regarding Taylors of Chobham. I believe that the George Taylor you refer to was my Great Grand Father, his son Frederick was my Grand Father. Frederick's daughter Joan the eldest of 7 children was my Mother. I know that my G/Grand Father was the coachman at Chobham Place. There are a number of Fredericks Children still living including one who lives in Oz Would be glad to help fill any gaps possible or at least put you in touch with some of the older relatives.

I just replied to your first e mail and thank you for this one as well. Aunty Dorothy had told me about Joan, if I can help you with the past Taylors just ask.

The only George I can find for a birth is from Montrose, is that near Dundee?

It is about 30 miles from Dundee to Montrose. If your ancestor's army papers say he was born in Dundee, then it isn't likely that he was actually born in Montrose. The important bit of anyone's place of birth was the parish, because if someone fell on hard times, it was their birth parish that would be responsible for looking after them, unless they had lived long enough in another parish to be able to claim 'settlement' there. So, in general, if he says Dundee, he means the parish of Dundee, not the parish of Montrose. Unless he was born in Montrose and his parents had moved to Dundee when he was too young to notice, and had omitted to tell him that he was born in Montrose.

The other part of my question is, was it common for men from Scotland to travel to England and join the army?

It was more usual to join the Army locally and then be posted to England. Army records for those dates are held in the National Archives at Kew in England. See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Is it possible to get birth detail on line for these 2

Yes and no. You can get most surviving baptism (rather than birth) details. However be aware that not all baptisms were recorded, and not all records have survived.
