Hotels in St Ewe in 1870s
« on: Monday 12 July 10 20:58 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

My great great grandparents were married at the Parish Church in St Ewe in 1874.  At the time of their marriage they were recorded on the marriage certificate as living at a Hotel in St Ewe, the name appears as, perhaps, Hersro Hotel, although I cannot find any record of such a hotel.

I have attached an image showing the name of the He* Hotel, in St Ewe, listed twice as they were both living there and I presume working there.  If anyone has any idea what this name is I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks
J

Interesting.  If you look at the attached image which contains more examples of the text, the r at the end of spinster and bachelor look similar to the potential r at the end

Is it unusual to see Hewas Water and not Hewaswater and any ideas why they have not given a house name or number?

Thanks for the help

Hi
The second word looked like Water to me and not hotel when I originally saw it that is how I found Hewaswater... [not like me to spot stuff like that!].

Maybe it was how it was back in the 1870 .. it may have been 2 words. However, with all the Certs I have got over the years it could well be someone not writing it down correctly!!?? That is another search to find out the history of the area....

I also have many Certs that just say a place name for the address .. it is most frustrating

Thanks for that, very helpful.  I've plugged the name into Google Earth and it seperates it out into two, surely it must be correct then  ;)
