Hello,

I am wondering if anyone out there has any information on a place called Cuan in Kerry. I am looking in particular for Catholic parish records for the area. I am not having any luck and I was wondering if any kind soul can point me in the right direction?

Did you check out irishgenealogy.ie for Kerry baptisms etc?
Also where did you see the placename? If it was written somewhere on an old document it could be a spelling error etc as nothing springs to mind initially..but Kerry is a big place so it might be a smaller townland.?
There is a Laune river/townland in Killorglin Co Kerry? Could it be Luan?not Cuan therefore Laun/e?

Cuan is the Irish word for harbour.If you google "cuan kerry" there are a number of references to the name.I think yours may be Cuan in the Ventry area of the Dingle peninsula-still Irish speaking.

        Thank you both for your speedy replies. In answer to your reply Tierneylass Cuan is not called Cuan any longer. I did see one site that mentioned its new name many moons ago but now cannot find it although I have tried and tried. It was still called Cuan in the early 1800s, but I have no idea when this changed. That is why I find it so hard to pinpoint a parish church for it.

         In answer to your reply Luimneach I have tried Google in every way I can think of, but no luck.  I am grateful to you both for you efforts to help me. I guess I will just have to keep trying.

Hi, Cuan in the Irish language means Harbour.

I cant find a reference to Cuan Co Kerry but Laune is near Killorglin (the riven Laune runs through Killorglin) Laune would be very small.

It might be a case of putting 2+2 together and coming up with 5 but well worth investigating.

Hi Nora,
Regarding Cuan, I was wondering if maybe it was Cuas which is a townland in the Glencar region of Kerry. If you see Cuas written in cursive the s at the end could be mistaken for an n. Its about 8 miles from Killorglin just beyond Lough Acoose. Church records are in Glenbeigh/Glencar but it borders both Killorglin and Beaufort. Civil records should mainly be in Caherciveen.
