John DEWDNEY Jnr
« on: Saturday 10 July 10 12:40 BST (UK) »
John Dewdney Jnr was a paper mill owner at Exwick between 1852/3 and 1858. I want to know where he was in 1851 and 1861. He may be the son of John Dewdney of Hele paper mill, but there is more than one John Dewdney in Devon during the middle of the 19th Century.

Thank you in advance.

Hi davidc

http://bookhistory.blogspot.com/2006/12/devon-bideford-budleigh.html

Appears to confirm the relationship, as son of John I. Also says (I think, lots of 'code talk'  that John II  died in a train accident at Hele in 1858

Cheers

Thank you Ambly for replying so quickly. However, I am trying to find out if John Dewdney Jnr is the son of John II who died in the railway accident (he was run over). John Jnr may have lived with his father (if he was his father) at Hele in 1851 but I can't prove it.

Hi,

He is not living with them on the 1841 or 51 census but JohnII did have a son John according to this marriage announcement:

15 September, 1853 John eldest son of John Dewdney Esq of Staplake House Devon to Eliza daughter of Mr. W. Burgess of Trengrove.

JohnII death announcement states he was of Staplake House too.

In the 1861 census John is living in Camberwell:

Camden Lodge, Peckham, Camberwell

John Dewdney, Head, M, 35, Commission Agent in Paper, Devonshire Hele
Eliza, Wife, M, 44, Cornwall Illogan
Elizabeth Rogers, U, 31, General Servant, Cornwall Sithney

Regards,
Mo

Hi David

Is the death announcement the same one I saw, Mo?  A report of the death?

From the Times, stating that
On Wednesday afternoon, 9 Jun 1858
John DEWDNEY of Staplake-House, near Starcross
He had been to Hele near Bradninch.....where he had formerly carried on extensive paper mills....killed
(gorily reported, I might add!),    while he was crossing the tracks at Hele train station to get to what he (mistakenly) believed was his train home, and despite the efforts of a station employee to restrain him.. He was aged beteween 60 & 70 and had only days previous attended the wedding of a daughter.

Or have I missed something..........

I can't see a John DEWDNEY death of FreeBMD registered in the Tiverton or St Thomas districts:
Starcross, nr Kenton - falls under the St Thomas reg, District.
Hele village near Bradninch - falls under the Tiverton reg, District

If he died at Hele train station - should be registered under Tiverton. If they took him back to Starcross area, then maybe ST Thomas?

In  FreeBMD, I see only the following in the right sort of place & time : Death: Jun Qtr 1858
William Sweitland DEWDNEY - St Thomas - 5b, pg 43
Who I think is William Sweetland DEWDNEY,  brother possibly?   of the following fellow, who is also deceased by 1861:

1841: at Nr 6 Bedford Circus, Bedford Precinct, City of Exeter, Devon
HO107 / Piece 266 / Book: 3 / Folio: 1 / Page: 1
J S DEWDNEY 41, Printer - Y
Mary DEWDNEY 38 - Y
Mary DEWDNEY 1 - Y
Charlotte COLMAN 20, F.S. - Y
Christiana CLARK 25, F.S. - Y

1851 at 6 Bedford Circus, Bedford Precinct, City of Exeter, Devon
HO107 / Piece: 1869 / Folio: 165 / Page: 52
Head: John S DEWDNEY 51, Printer & Newspaper Proprietor, b Exeter, Devon
Wife: Mary, 47, b Bramford Speke, Devon
Dau: Mary 10, Scholar at Home, b Exeter
Dau: Jaquetta S , 6, Scholar at Home, b Exeter
Son: John S, 4,  b Exeter
Governess: Cecelia WILLIAMS 19, unm, Governess, b Tolmer Devon
Serv: Charlotte HAMMOND 25, unm, House Servant, b Roborough, Devon
Serv: Ann PASCOE 18, unm, House Servant, b Woodford Cornwall

1861: at Reeds Vale, West Teignmouth, Devon
RG9 /  Piece: 1400 /  Folio: 16 / Page: 25
Head: Mary DEWDNEY 50, Gentlewoman, b Bramford Speke, Devon
Dau: Mary 20, unm, b Exeter
Dau: Jaquetta S., 16, unm, b Exeter
Serv: Lucey BURRIDGE 17, unm, Servant, b Crediton, Devon

Then there are  deaths :
John Swelland DEWDNEY, Jun Qtr 1856, Exeter
John Sweetland DEWDNEY, Sep Qtr 1852 Brentford

Since a John DEWDNEY  was in the  Devon paper industry since at least 1673, it seems from this
http://www.exeter.gov.uk/media/pdf/s/d/Exwick_final.pdf

I guess you're quite right - a number  John DEWDNEY Jnrs likely running about in the following centuries....

The specific John DEWDNEY Jnr you are researching, what do you have on him that is concrete - where you know him to be, well, him  ;D

Cheers

Taking from the 1858 Times report:
He (John DEWDNEY) was aged beteween 60 & 70 and had only days previous attended the wedding of a daughter.

In Jun Qtr 1858, there is a marriage - the only female DEWDNEY marriage I can see to fit the above reporting:
Mary Jane DEWDNEY, St Thomas , Devon - to Henry Drew THOMAS

And a Times Marriage announcement, 9 Jun 1858
On the 3rd inst at St Paul's Shawcross Devon....Henry D THOMAS of Exeter  to Mary Jane, daughter of John DOWDNEY Esq of Staplake House, Starcross

1851: Hele Mill Tenk? (Teuk??) -  Bradninch, Exeter, Devon
HO107 /  Piece: 1888 /  Folio: 141 / Page: 10
Head: John DEWDNEY 58, Paper manufacturer, b Bradninch
Wife: Mary DEWDNEY 52, b Bradninch
Dau: Susannah 23, unm, Paper Manufacturer's Dau, b Bradninch
Dau: Mary Jane 19, unm, Paper Manufacturer's Dau, b Bradninch
Dau: Harriet 17, Scholar,  b Bradninch
Dau: Lucy 10, Scholar, b Bradninch
Serv: Mary DRAKE 20, unm, Cook, b Cullompton, Devon
Serv: Hannah SCADDING 21, unm, Housemaid, b Payhembury, Devon
Visitor: Dulsibella DREW (female) 47, unm, Annuitant, b Bradninch

and right after them, same page:
1851: Address, Hele:
Head: Robert DEWDNEY 45, Paper Manufacturer, b Bradninch
Wife: Susan 45, b Tallaton, Devon
Dau: Helen 7, b St Leonards, Devon
Serv: Mary HAYMAN 14, General Servant, b Wimple, Devon

Here is the now-married daughter in1861
1861: at Nr 4 Queen St Road, St Davids, Exeter, Devon
Head: Henry Drew THOMAS 31, Oil & Tallow Merchant, b St Thomas Exeter
Wife: Mary J THOMAS 28, b Bradninch
Son: Henry Dewdny THOMAS 2, b Exeter
Dau: Mary THOMAS 10 months, b Exeter
Serv: Rosa DELLE 24, unm, Domestic Servanty, b Drebberton??, S-----??
Serv: Luisa OXENHAM 19, unm, Nursemaid, b ?ampton??, Devon

It seems Mary Jane's father was deceased by 1861 too - her mother is a widow in 1861:

1861: 6 Clifton Place, St Sidwell Devon
RG9 / Piece: 1394 / Folio: 79 / Page: 45 /
Head: Mary DEWDNEY 62, wid, Proprietess & Landed Property, b Bradninch
Dau: Harriet DEWDNEY 26, unm, b Bradninch
Dau: Lucie A DEWDNEY 20, unm,  b Bradninch
Neice: Jessie DREW 20, unm,  b Bradninch
Serv: Agnes BACK 23, unm, Cook, b Kern?? Devon
Serv: Sarah BRADFORD 15, unm, House Servant,  b Pinhoe, Devon

Bradninch is covered by the Tiverton Registration District
St Sidwell is covered by the Exeter Registration District

Searching - John *NEY deaths in Devon 1851 - 1861.....There are John DEWDNEY deaths in St Thomas (1854) and in Plymouth (1852), & nothing for anyone remotely looking like a DEWDNEY in Tivertson

Cheers

Thank you everyone for your efforts regarding John Dewdney Jnr. I know he ran the paper mill at Exwick between 1852/3 and 1858, when an advert appeared for an auction selling his household effects and the comment "leaving the neighbourhood" - it would seem he ended up in Camberwell. I have various cuttings from the Flying Post about him during his time at Exwick including the marriage announcement which crucially states he is from the Exwick paper mill, but does not mention his parentage. However, the Times announcement does, so I think I can say conclusively that he was the son of John Dewdney of Hele. His father invented a new type of writing paper and was awarded a gold medal at the Great Exhibition, while John Jnr manufactured brown wrapping paper at Exwick.

The Devon/Exwick PDF file is incorrect regarding the mill in 1673, as that was on another site, and I also think they are referring to John Dewdney in the 1850s, not the 17th Century.

John Sweetland Dewdney is a red herring in this case, but someone I shall have to investigate regarding his links with the Exeter newspapers!

Thank you Mo for the link to Camberwell and Ambly for all the other links.

Hi,

The newspaper I found John Jnrs marriage stating he was the son of John of Staplake was not the Times.  It was taken from the Royal Cornwall Gazette, Falmouth Packet and General Advertiser dated 30th September, 1853.

I should have added that it took place at Illogan.
