Finding a Fusilier

Hello to all Root Chatters,

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with my problem. I am looking for information on my wife's Gt-Grandfather Richard Gregory 14502, who served in the Lancashire Fusiliers during WWI. I recently wrote to Your Family History Magazine, (YFH), in a hope that they'd be able to point me in the right direction.

My query was published and answered in this months YFH Issue 92, under the same title I've given this message. My question is relating to the answer I was given, how does one translate reference no H1/101B17 into a WO329 reference?

Unfortunately I've been unable to attach a copy of the response as the file is too large for the allowance permitted.

There is a medal card for a Richard Gregory Lancashire Fusiliers on the NA website - but his number is given as 14503 - is that your man?

WO329 are medal rolls that were signed by an officer and submitted to the Medal Office. Some months later the medals were despatched to the man at his last known address. They are original files in Kew, so you need a reader's ticket. Also in Kew are indexes that convert the references on the medal index card into which 'piece' within WO329 you need. They are by the smaller enquiry desk on the right, and you can ask at that desk if you have problems.

You can also try searching it on the NA catalogue by entering WO 329 (with a space) plus the roll reference - though it should be H/1/101B17. This gives you - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=5450707

Though you should always double check when you are in Kew.

Yes that is my man he appears to have two numbers, the 14502 is recorded on his medals, which my wife has, and the 14503 number which appears on the NA records. I must admit that I've assumed that this must be a transcription error, though as we all know assumption can and frequently does lead one down the proverbial garden path!

I thought it might be a case of a visit to Kew, unfortunately that, for me at least, is out of the question as I was recently diagnosed with cancer, a type for which there isn't a cure. I'll ask around the family and see if I can persuade someone to make the trip for me, but thank you for your advise.

It looks as as if 14503 is a typo on the NA records, 14502  is the number on the actual medal card, he was also awarded the Silver War Badge.
