Completed. Reed/Williams in Pontadawe
« on: Thursday 08 July 10 16:37 BST (UK) »
New to this board so not sure if I am doing this right but wanted to see if anyone can help, I'm tring to find info about my grandmother and her parents/family, but have limited info. This is what I know.

Elizabeth Ann Reed born in 1909 (died in 1973) parents Thomas James Reed and Ann Lewis. She married: Richard J Symonds in 1934; on marriage licence name was Mary Elizabeth Reed parents Ann and father Llewellyn Williams. My grandparents ran the greengrocers in Pontadawe.
My great grandmother (Ann) remarried Llewellyn Williams at some point and there were 3 other children, Hannah (who died young of TB) a son Islwyn and another daughter. I believe they lived in Pisinngwyn (sp?) a cottage on the Gwyrd. My great grandmother was buried at Llanguicke Parish Church in 1941.
Sorry very limited info; I've looked at lots of online sources and nothing is coming up for anyone in census or birth/death/marriage records. Except my grandmother's death record in 1973 (which I have). I'm also limited to location - as I'm living in Canada so have to resort to online sources.
Thank you I much appreciate any assistance anyone can give me. Deborah

Hello and welcome to RootsChat
Sorry I have to ask more questions??
Why is she named Mary Elizabeth Williams on marriage -also UK marriage cert would not give mother's name -only father's name and occupation???

Ask as many questions as you like. I'm grasping at straws now and I desparately want to find out more about my grandmother's family. I have loads about my grandfather's side (the Symonds).

If you are asking why the names was changed from birth certificate to marriage licence, we have no idea why. This was not discovered until after my grandmother passed away and we found the marriage licence in her belongings; and there is nobody in the family to ask.

You are absolutely correct it does not have her mother's name on marriage certificate - only father, who is a different to the name on birth certificate. It is listed as Lllewellyn Williams, occupation labourer. Birth certificate says Thomas James Reed.

It is all a puzzle that I'd like to try and unravel. I just thought it would be WAY easier!

Hi Suz,

Death certificate says Mary Elizabeth Symonds, otherwise Elizabeth Ann Symonds. Registered 2 March 1973.

Marriage certificate to my grandfather Richard John Symonds: October 1934, in Bodenham, Hereford. Interestesting, I didn't know that until you asked and I looked. I always thought they were married in Pontadawe.

The first marriage:

Marriage

REED Thomas James
LEWIS Ann

Swansea 11a 1826

Dec quarter 1908

You should find the family together in 1911 but you will have to search that yourself.

Had located marriage and found Ann and Thomas on 1911 Census (unable to disclose census details).

Unfortunately, place of birth is general, not specific, for Ann and Lewis is a common name. The marriage cert will help, hopefully including father's details.

regards

Same here - and Thomas is easily found in 1901 once you know where to look!
