Dreher family - Derby
« on: Thursday 08 July 10 16:02 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any connections or interest in the Dreher family of Derby c1830's to 1880's?

John Dreher is originally described as a pork butcher from Foreign Parts. He married Elizabeth Wathall in 1835. His son Thomas Dreher worked as a cab driver/groom and married Emma Ball in 1873. By 1880 he was in Salford/Manchester where his daughter Eliza married Samuel Walker in 1902.

Samuel and Eliza are my maternal great grandparents.

I would like to learn more about the Dreher family as I lose my branch in the early 1900's.

Greig - Coltbridge/Edinburgh/Ayton/Earlston/Carlisle/Sheffield/Manchester
Walker - Altrincham/Manchester/Salford
Hunt - Redhill/Earlswood/Dover
Dreher - Derby/Salford/Manchester

Thanks Paul, that's great. I am on the case already.

Just checked for the book on Amazon and they don't stock at present. I'll check my local library.

Cheers.

Hi,      I also have John Frederick Dreher in my family tree. His daughter Evelina (laner) Married Alfred Gunston. Their son John Gunston is my Grandfather. Most of them worked either at the Silk Mill or the railway. I hope I find out more about John Dreher the German Pork Butcher. Like where in Germany he came from and who his family members were.

Hi
Just came across this site!
My maternal grandfather was John Frederick Dreher, who was born in June 1877 and died in Derby on 25 January 1939. His father was John Frederick Dreher, born 1848, though that's as far as I've got.
My gf was known to all as Jack and my Mum was only six when he died. She remembers him waving to her, somewhat limply, as they carried him into an ambulance and never saw him again.
He was a blacksmith on the railway and married an Irish girl named Bridget O'Shea. They had four children together  - Terence (1929-2005) Kevin (1931-2001) Bridget (my Mum, 1933 to date) Michael (1934 - ?) plus Anne, who died in childbirth in 1938.
He also took on two older children Barry and Kitty from a previous relationship that Bridget had. Mum only remembers that they were ten years or so older and I've not managed to source anything on them. Barry was known as "Garett" but I'm unsure of any relevance.
Hope that's of some use to you - let me know if you've anything might help me in any way. If there's other info you need, I'll be seeing Mum next week so let me know!
Cheers
Steve

Have also just seen this thread....not sure if I've got connections to yourW Derby Drehers or not. I've got a Christian Dreher (father's name Friedrich) who emigrated to Britain from either Hanover or Berlin in Germany (the documents vary) with two of his brothers. They started out in London, moved to Salford & then Liverpool & then Christian (none of the others) moved down to Nottingham. I know that my grandparents used to visit Dreher relatives in Derby.....so maybe this at least helps you with where the  Drehers came from. Well, not really, because either Berlin or Hanover covers a very large area. Please get in touch if you want any further details of my lot & I'll tell you if I find out anything else in general (unlikely, I fear)

It's interesting, Jim, that your Thomas Dreher, moved to Salford, as my Drehers lived there for a while & my grandparents kept in touch with relatives "in Manchester", though I don't know whether they were Drehers or not. In my case, the Dreher surname eventually mutated into Dryer (a common Manchester name).

Oooo.....thanks spendlove....could be interesting for me too. Even though my Dreher wasn't a pork butcher, I suspect it's highly likely that he was related to the Derby Drehers (more of that when I get time to post it). I think both of the locations I've got COULD be suspect. My Drehers worked for a time at  a  big sugar refinery  in Liverpool (almost all the labour was German) & they seem to have listed almost all of their workers as born in Hanover. Probably the overwhelming majority were, but there's always a good chance that some got listed as that by default. Berlin may have been entered on a census if someone asked my Dreher where he was born, he looked uncomprehendingly & they prompted with "Berlin ?" knowing he was German. If he seemed to assent, it would have gone down on the census.
