FORD family Woodleigh
« on: Wednesday 07 July 10 06:38 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I have a transcript of the 1851 census for Woodleigh Village, Devon.

Head of the family is John Ford age 39, the sheet says he has two daughters called Rebecca one age 12 one age 4. Is this a common practice having two living children with the same name?

I wonder if anyone could please help me find out if the girls married.

Many thanks in advance

Kind regards
Leandra

In 1861 the only children with their parents John and sarah are Mary age 20 (where did she come from?) James age 18 (he was 10 in 1851) and Richard.
There is a death for a Rebecca Ford March 1/4 1853 Kingsbridge vol 5b page 63.
Kingsbridge covers Avetong and Woodliegh which is where Sarah and John were born and lived.
John's mother was also a Rebacco (don't you love that spelling) It may be that the enumerator got carried away. Could Mary in the 1861 actually be the older Rebacco in the 1851.
There is a Rebecca Ford age 15 living with the Born  farming family at Okehampton as a servant age 15.  But she says born Samford Courtway devon which google maps doesn't recognise.
In answer to your question- I have only come across children being given the name of a deceased sibling or sometimes the same name but as a second name for one of the children.

Hi Crisane,

Thanks for replying :)

On the 1841 transcript Mary is age 7 months, wonder where she was in 1851.

thanks for the death in 1853.

Kindest regards

Hi Leandra
There is only one marriage for a Rebecca Ford 1861-1871 and that is the  in Okehampton registration district in 1867. Okehampton is where the 15 year old Rebecca was living with the Born family in 1861 census.
Sampford Courtenay (not Courtway!) also covered by this district so that clears that mystery up.
Woodliegh and Sampford Courtney are 33 miles apart.

Hello Leandra,
I think there was a transcription error when it was first written the latter was my 2xgt-grandmother Emma northmore Ford born Woodliegh in 1846 father John Ford gunsmith  this as alway's puzzled me too her mother was Sarah H.
Kind regards TREEBUSTER
