1861 census - TEMPLE
« on: Tuesday 06 July 10 16:16 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Just want to try and find Caroline TEMPLE in the 1861 census.

I have her in the 1851 census living with her parents George and "Annett" at Elizabeth St, St Luke, Chelsea.

I also have her arriving in Australia as Caroline TEMPLE in 1862 (ie not married). I think her mother Harriet died in 1865 but her father George died in 1853.

If someone could find her for me that would be great

That would be her mother and brother!! ... and the wife of this household is her sister!! Woohoo!! Thanks

Caroline arrived in Australia aboard the "Boanerges". I haven't been able to work out when and where it departed but i believe it arrived at Port Phillip on 10th July 1862

Her age is interesting. In the 1851 census her age is recorded as 24 but on the shipping list, 11 years later, in 1862 her age is given as 27. Perhaps i don't have the same Caroline TEMPLE. Although her death certificate in 1888 says she had been in Australia for 26 years which works out to her arriving in 1862!

I was trying to establish if she was defn in England in early 1861.

What actual age does the 1888 Death Cert show - does it match either the 1851 census or the 1861/2 shipping list?

As you can see if she was indeed 27 in 1861/2, there are other candidates (1851 census):-

Caroline Temple - Parents Isaac & Caroline born c1833 Spitalfields, Middlesex

Caroline Mary Temple -  Parents William & Hannah born c1835 Kempsey, Worcestershire

Caroline Temple - Parents William & Judith born c1836 Guyhirn, Cambridgeshire

I suppose I'm also asking - how do you know that the 1851 Caroline with that mother and siblings is correct

I would have thought she would have been in England early 1861. How long did the voyage from England to Australia take?

Caroline HARRIS (nee TEMPLE)
The following can be obtained from Carolines death certificate
she died in 1888 age as 66 which makes her born in 1822
she had spent 26 years in Australia which fits in with the shipping record i have for her in 1862

... but the shipping list records her age as 27 so according to that she was born in 1835

Can you please check her age in the 1851 census, in one place i have her as 24 years old and 26 in another.

In the 1841 census her age is recorded as 15 which would make her born 1826

Hmmm! :-\

Sorry i missed some of your last post

Victorian death certificates are a wealth of information and it lists her parents as George Alexander TEMPLE and Harriet TEMPLE (nee YOUNGER) but the age discrepancies aren't helping things!

yes, 24 in the 1851. 1841 rounds adults (15+) down to lower 5 year multiple, so if shown as 15 she could have been 15, 16, 17, 18 or 19!

Lots of errors and miscalcs tho, esp on the 1841.

Good, so I think with all the info you have provided from the Death Cert we can be sure its the 1851 lady you have - the others I show can be eliminated.

Still cant find her tho in 1861.

I wonder if she was in a District that has been 'lost'?

http://www.familyhistory.uk.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=73&Itemid=2

failing that, she is either lumped into a household and wrongly shown with surname of the family, or just plain missed in the enumeration exercise. Having SCOTLAND as a PoB should have helped tho ....

Had a look at the link you posted and yes she could have been "lost".

I guess finding her in the 1861 census wouldn't have really proved anything as we have the shipping record for her in 1862.

Her disappearance has led me to another thought - she had siblings who moved to Canada and a brother who went to Australia, then New Zealand, then back to Australia, then back to England then Australia again! Maybe she was in another country?

Urrrrgh - where to i start looking. LOL!! (Sounds much more interesting than being lost!)
