I think the following would have been around in 1940 ...

Irish Times
Irish Press
Irish Independent
(Dublin) Evening Mail
(Dublin?) Evening Herald

probably in the National Library, or Pearse St Library Research Room

I'm assuming it's Northbrook in East Wall area, not Ranelagh?
Church is probably St Joseph's, East Wall, though it didn't become a parish till 1941. prior to that the parish was St Laurence O'Toole, Seville place

I was looking at old editions of the Irish Indo this morning and since we had an exact date I had a quick look for this  ...  these are the details found in the death notice :

Flynn (Dublin) 4th Feb 1940 at his residence 19 Upr Northbrook Ave., Patrick Flynn, late employe G.S.R North Wall (mentions wife and family but no names...) ... remains will be removed to St. Laurence O'Toole's parish Church tomorrow (Tues) ... Funeral to Glasnevin on Wed after 10 mass.

Thanks for that shanew147.  Unfortunatly I did not get time to do what I hoped.  Did get to Glasnevin and although the receptionist was very helpful the computer still said no.  That was the receptionist in the museum part.  she did suggest that I email, so with extra bit of information I will try that.  Sorry meant to say that is my Great Granddad.
