? Pantygnoch Cilcain

Hi Guys

I've been looking at the PR's for Cilcain (on microfilm) and one of the abodes is Pantygnoch.

Does anyone know where abouts this would have been as I've never heard of it and a Google search was fruitless.

I've attached the image just in case I've made it out wrong.

I can't see any mention of it in the  Description of the Enumeration districts of Cilcain in the Census.

The 1841 Census has a Jones family at " Pant gnog, Cilcen, Llys y Coed".

I have found several of the other addresses on the same Census page (Nant, Ty Newydd) but not "Pant gnog".

The nearest is a "Pant y gog" (cuckoo dell/hollow) in the area.

Found Nant & Ty Newydd on an old (1870) OS map, but not Pantygnog. Also a few fields to the East is Ty'n y Caeau, which also appears on a modern OS map. If you can find this it might give you an indication of the area in which Pantygnog lay.

Ty'n y Caeau lies almost due North of the village, near the top of the next grid square up.

On the same Census page as Pant Gnog in 1841 are Nant, Tynewydd, Shamber Wen, Llysy goed,  Ty Newydd, Tyn y gaiau, Pentre Cilcen and Fron Fedw (as written by enumerator).
I can find all but Pant gnog and Fron Fedw on an 1879 Ordnance Survey map, North and North West of the village as you say.
Can't find Pant gnog in 1851 Census.

Tried to work out what gnoch/cnoch or gnog/cnog might be no success.

The HAYES family had a branch living at Fron Fedw also and the in-laws living in Nant, so its good to know the rough area.

Could it be Pant y Groch??

Having said that, I still can't recall anywhere called Pant y Groch (I lived in Cilcain for 15 years) - but it sounds like a sensible place name (Groch = loud, noisy etc.).

Also, are you sure you are looking for a place in the village of Cilcain, or in the parish of Cilcain??

On the Cuckoo theme, there is a Cae'r Gog in Pantymwyn....although this is a fairly modern road, it may have been built on an older building/road.
