Other oppinion's please
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 18:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Jemima Wortley was baptised 21.10.1768 in Methwold. Her parents are recorded as George and Cornelia Wortley. Freereg and IGI record no further children to this couple. HOWEVER, a George Wortley married a Constance Wortley 3.10.1768 Methwold. They as a couple appear to have had 3 children, Mary 1770, Thomas 1773 and Joseph 1776.  George I believe was baptised 4.8.1745 the son of Thomas and Elizabeth. Trying to establish if Cornelia and Constance are one of the same and Jemima 1768 and Joseph 1776 are brother and sister. Any views , comments and suggestions welcome.

John

Hello John,

I don't know if you've seen the NOAH site (Norfolk Online Access to Heritage), but as luck would have it, there is a facsimile of a Will of George Wortley of Methwold, in which he mentions his three sons, and three daughters - one of them being Jemima.

http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk/Summary.aspx?pos=0

So I think Constance and Cornelia must have been one and the same.

Hello John. Take a look at: -  http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#r=1;p=allCollections    There are a large number of Norfolk PRs on film, select "England, Norfolk Parish Registers", scroll for Methwold and select Banns, Marriages 1754 -1812, page 12. On the left side is a marriage between John Wortley and Elizabeth Chapman; 17/03/1768; on the right side is the marriage between George and Constance 03/10/1768.
Change to Baptism, Marriages, Burials,  1746 - 1781, page 32 on the left side at the top is baptism of Elizabeth daughter of Jas? and Elizabeth baptised 14/03/1768; on the right side middle is Jemima daughter of George and Cornelia baptised 21/10/1768. If Constance is Cornelia then Jemima was born almost on the wedding day. There seems to be a large "Wortley" family in Methwold, it might pay to troll through the PRs for that period and see if you can isolate individual parents and children, the pages I have looked at are quite ledgible. Good Luck MIK.

Yorkslass, thanks for the link to NOAH. At present having trouble getting it online. In George's will does it mention Jemima,s surname at all as by then she was married. In my first posting I mentioned 2 sons and 2 daughters- could you please tell me who the other 2 are.

Thanks for help.

John

Hello John,

Hope you manage to get a link to the NOAH website - it's nice to be able to see these things online....

The Will was made on the 1st December 1810, and is by "George Wortley of the parish of Methwold, yeoman"

It was proved on the 29th January 1813.
In it George mentions his beloved wife "Constant" Wortley -
His three sons are Munson Wortley, Joseph Wortley and Thomas Wortley.
The three daughters are Jemima Wortley, Mary Bell and Elizabeth Wortley.

The site MJR mentions is terrific - I've used it a lot for my Great Yarmouth lot.

I think you'd need to check the parish burial registers to see if you can find deaths for Constance/Constant and for Cornelia to see if they were two people or just one.

Hello John, i have only just found this thread, i wondered how you are related to Jemima? Munson, mentioned in the Will is my 4x gt grandfather. I don't know how long you have been researching the Wortley's, but yes, all the Methwold Wortley's are one big family. It would be great to hear back from you, please get in contact.

Regards Louise
