Elizabeth REMINGTON nee BAINES ??-1801
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 04:16 BST (UK) »
Elizabeth BAINES married John REMINGTON at St Sepulchre Holborn, on 26 Jan 1768. Witnesses were John COMFORT and Wm BANISTER.

Trying to find her baptism and parentage, without much luck. She died 1801, leaving a fairly detailed will, which I have. She was not buried at St Sepulchre as far as I can see. John REMINGTON was buried there 15 Apr 1784.

John COMFORT must have been a good friend as he is left something in John's will, and John and Elizabeth's eldest son born 1770 is named John Bains Comfort REMINGTON.

Has anyone come across this BAINES family, or John COMFORT.

Hi

Since the connection is to St Sepulchre have you looked at this PCC will

Will of John Comfort, Butcher of Saint Sepulchre , City of London 17 October 1785 PROB 11/1134

Yes Valda, i do have the will of John COMFORT. Forgot that I did. Must have got it when I downloaded John and Elizabeth REMINGTONs.

No mention of the REMINGTONs in it, only his wife Ann, four sons, a sister and niece.

He may have been in partnership with John REMINGTON, with them both being butchers in that area.

Hi

There is a marriage of a John Comfort to an Ann Parden 31st July 1763 at St Benet Paul's Wharf which might be John's marriage, but if the relationship to John Remington was a friend/business partner then I'm not sure researching John Comfort's line will necessarily achieve anything.

There is a Henry Baines innholder of St Sepulchre (PCC will 1691) but that is dangerously skipping generations in a city with a high mortality rate and high mobility and with no evidence that either John or Elizabeth were actually born in London. There also appears to be no continuance of the surname in the St Sepulchre registers.

You do however have a Remington family in St Sepulchre parish registers

JOHN REMMINGTON
Christening:  27 DEC 1737   St Sepulchre, London
Father:  JOHN REMMINGTON
Mother:  MARY

ELIZABETH REMINTON
Christening:  05 JAN 1735   St Sepulchre, London
Father:  JOHN REMINTON
Mother:  MARY

SARAH REMINGTON
Christening:  05 NOV 1739   St Sepulchre, London
Father:  JOHN REMINGTON
Mother:  MARY

PHILIP REMINGTON
Christening:  19 FEB 1742   St Sepulchre, London
Death:  04 JAN 1743
Father:  JOHN REMINGTON
Mother:  MARY

JOHN REMINGTON
Christening:  10 APR 1744   St Sepulchre, London
Father:  JOHN REMINGTON
Mother:  MARY

Earlier Remington baptisms to John and Esther 1729-1731

and Uriah and Elizabeth

No wills (for Remingtons in St Sepulchre) held at The National Archives or the LMA but since this is the City of London there could be ones held at the Guildhall Library (see the help guide on London wills on the L & M board for London will indexes). There is a PCC will for a Mary Remington in Whitechapel - but why there - it looks much to much like a stab in the dark.

Thanks Valda

Yes the John born 1744 is the one who married Elizabeth BAINES. He was a butcher in St Sepulchre.

Hi

There is nothing really to go on for Elizabeth Baines parentage.

When did she sign her will? Is there any chance she died pre 1801 and you can find her earlier in the St Sepulchre burials? I haven't looked at them so I don't know whether the burial register is giving ages that early.

Probate was 20 Feb 1801. Yes St Sepulchre burials do have ages. John's age was given as 40 when he was buried in 1784.

Will check them again for Elizabeth.

She mentions four grandchildren, two sons and two daughters of eldest son John, but not the son born 1799, so makes me think that she made the will before then, and may have died by 1799. I have been looking in 1800 and very early 1801, but perhaps should be looking earlier.

Hi Ian

Isn't her signature and the witnesses signature dated on the will?
