Great stuff Valda! Thanks!

Note that Sarah Sugden is temporarily withem in 1871 !?

I notice you are still reluctant to say whether you think Samuel 1798 is son of Samuel 1770 !!??  What do you reckon?

Thanks

Phil

Hi

The issue would be the only evidence for his birth in Middlesex is the 1841 census.

'There was a belief that the census was a way of gathering data for the poor law and that people might in consequence end up being sent back to their place of birth. This could be the reason, as well as a hazy knowledge of county geography, that many people gave yes to the county of birth question, claiming they were born in the county, when later censuses show they were not'

Yes -  although there is the Samuel Sugden who with his siblings Elizabeth, John were born in a row ( 1765,1766,1770) at St Leonards to Samuel and Elizabeth of Worship Street. His age would be exactly right in 1841. But it seems difficult to say with certainty that the other Samuel born in Leeds is his son...why would there be this constant movement between Yorkshire and London in the 18th and early 19th century when transport was so primitive and the distances so great. It would make more sense if 1798 Samuel had been born in London!

The 1798 Samuel died in 1896, and his estate was worth £140,000 at the time. Not sure what that would be in todays values.

Hi Ian having troubles with this one. There seems to be doubt on the paternity of Samuel 1798. I presumed Samuel's father to be Samuel Sugden born 1770 and Sarah Hutchinson. Lisa
