1861 Census Cleator Moor
« on: Wednesday 30 March 05 07:54 BST (UK) »
Have any Listers the 1861 Census for Cleator Moor?
I'm Looking for Margaret KELL(E)Y born abt 1844 Ireland married to ?? McANALLY (think b Ireland too)
I'm also looking for James Henry SLOAN(E) born abt 1845 Ireland too.
In the 1871 Census Margaret and James were married with a 9 year old daughter from Margarets first marriage.
Is the 1851 Census for Cumberland also only available if an address is supplied?
Thanks
Lynn

Lynn,

There is one Margaret KELLY in Cleator in 1861 about the right age (22) - a little older than expected, though it has been known to happen...

There is also a lodger the same age called Hugh MCANALLEY - could be significant...

RG9/3951 / folio 9 / page 11 / sched 36 / Cleator Village
Margaret Kelly / Head / W / 49 / / Ireland
Margaret do / Daur / Un / 22 / Flax Mill Hand / do
Bernard do / Son / Un / 18 / Iron Ore Miner / do
Elizabeth do / Daur / Un / 16 / Flax Mill Hand / do
Agnes do / Daur / Un / 11 / do / do
Robert do / Son / Un / 9 / do / Cumberland Cleator
Elizabeth McCarter / Lodger / Un / 19 / do / Ireland
Hugh McAnalley / do / Un / 22 / Iron Ore Miner / do
John Fitzpatrick / do / Un / 21 / Mason Labourer / do

I'm having trouble finding a matching James SLOANE, though - and I can't find the 1871 entry you mention - do you have the reference for this so I can use the info for 1861 search?

Regards
Steve

Steve thank you for the info. It definitely looks like the family.
The 1871 Census RG10/5261 pg 36 you asked for.
I have been given a possible match for the SLOAN family but it worries me cause James is 6 years older than estimated .......married to an Ann with a year old daughter. RG9/3951 P32 & 33. I know ages aren't really much to go on but I still think there is a lot of difference between a 16 year old boy and a 22 year old man.............appearance wise. Don't know if a census taker could've made that sort of 'error' or the family for that matter. Maybe if he'd been older than the estimated 16 I'd feel happier with it.
Anyway. If you find any other possible match I'd really appreciate it
Lynn

Received James Henry SLOAN's marriage certificate to Margaret McANALLY/KELLY today. They were married 10 Nov 1867 Whitehaven.
James Henry's age is 22. Margaret's is 26.
Additional info ............ Jame's surname is spelt SLONEHis father is Patrick SLONE deceased.
Please if anyone can help with this info to find James Henry and family in the 1861 census. James should be 16 years old.

Hi Lynn

try this site and so a surname search on "Sloan" - you can then search on Folio for the household's details http://64.168.146.11/census/. Looks to list James lodging with possible relatives on the 1851?

There is also a partial name index for the 1851 on-line at http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/. Lists a possible family in Harrington - unfortunately Cleator Moor is not available on-line but the site lists where you can get hold of it if required although may be worth holding out for / posting a request for a specific 1851 lookup for Cleator?  At present the 1851 is paperbased and in 71 volumes so not many folks have all of it!

Cheers

Sue,
Thank you for that. The surname search on the 1851 Census I got to work but the Folio item search just keeps coming up 'no record found'
The James Sloan you found on the surname search could well be the one I'm after...........only he's down as a lodger >:( No parents. The James I'm after father's name was Patrick.........the Patrick shown living at the same address as James, is a lodging house keeper who has been in Egland more than 16 years (son George) and therefore definitely not the father of James (7) born Ireland. Why would a 7 year old child be a lodger.....maybe visiting Grandpa?
I need to find  a Patrick Sloan/Slone ... Younger perhaps

Hi Lynn

just to let you know the 1851 site is back up and running after an outage and you can now get the folio details up.  Us district 2a and folio item 111.  Looks to be listed with a Margaret McPartin and they were both from Louth.

Cheers

Sue

Thanks Sue,
Just what I needed a county. I've written to the Irish group and now I'll just have to wait and see if anyone can help me find the family.
