Complete: Shot in the dark - MCGONIGLE
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 18:37 BST (UK) »
I have a solid brick wall back in the states, but hope that by posting on here, someone might see it from my family and know where I can go from here.  My Megonigle relatives travel back to Hamilton and Bartimeus McGonigle, born 1806 and 1807 respectively, in Pennsylvania (probably Juniata County).  I believe thee were at least six siblings, including and Alfred, born about 1813 and Mary Ann, born about 1815, but have little other information.  It is said that their father was John McGonigle, who was born about 1772.  At least two of the brothers were said to be shoemakers.  I realize my thread does not even reach Ireland, but I am pretty confident that is where the family arrived from.  Can anyone provide any help on this family?

If I'm reading your post correctly, then the earliest possible Irish connection might be John McGonigle born c1772?
Civil registration in Ireland began 1845/1864 and first complete census for Ireland is 1901. Normally to trace Irish ancestors you need to know both the family's religion and where they loved (parish if not actual townland) in order to see if any church records survive for that particular area. However, even if you did narrow down the location more precisely than Ireland or a county the chance of finding any church records for 1770s is very slim.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for the info.  That is what I was afraid of, but wanted to validate my slim hopes of finding anything.

I am related to the McGonigle from around Ballyshannon, County Donegal.  Not that I have meet any of my Irish relatives.   (even though I am irish born in Ballyshannon brought up in Lancashire. It could be spelt McGonagle.
A lot of the McGonigle moved to Lancashire, England.  If I have time will look on the Micro Fich.  The McGonigle in 1857 were drapers, spirit dealers.  and also would have been flax seed growers of the Linen Industry.

Hello,
I am the great-great grandson of Alexander McGonigle, born 1828-1830 and emigrated to US (Phila.) in 1852 (laborer/stone mason). Ship's list shows Carnaugh / Carndonagh - Donegal as home. Ring any bells?

Thank you for your inputs!  Our family came over pretty early and there is almost nothing to go on other than Bart and Hamilton, so it doesn't look like I can connect at this point.

I am the great-great-great granddaughter of Hamilton Megonigle. I am also stuck and was wondering if anyone has any updated info on John McGonigle.

My great great grandfather was Hamilton Megonigle. I would be very interested in any photos or records of the family. I’m in Oregon. My grandpa was John Barton, son of Samuel Shepherd (Hamilton’s 10th child.) I was always told the family was hard to trace to Ireland because of records lost in the Johnstown Pennsylvania flood in 1889. They did also at times spell the name with an McGonigle.
