Somerset House
« on: Monday 28 June 10 22:34 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can pinpoint Somerset House, Aberystruth for me please.
It appears on 1861 Census; RG9/3997/153/p32, Schedule No 156 (George Prince).
I'm actually trying to decipher the address for Sched No 157: would it be Ponds Row?
Just thought Somerset House would help someone to target it.
Thanks for any confirmation.
Rob

Need to add that the entry is indexed as Bence - not Prince - to avoid confusion

Could be Ponds or could be Folds - I've checked the 2 previous pages but the writing is just as bad

Carole,
you're right, it is Bence.
Sorry for the confusion,

but do you know where Somerset House is / was?
Regards,
Rob

Sorry - I haven't a clue.  It just appears to be an isolated address in the middle of  Forge  Row

If you turn up the image and look at the top right hand corner you will see it shows page 28 of 188.  Change the 28 to 1 and you will find Forge Row on the first page and Forge House on page 2

If you keep using the forward arrow to advance the pages - Forge Row seems to be the only address for quite a while

I can't pinpoint Somerset House for you hencarrai but judging by the description of the enumeration district in which it was located on the 1861 I'd say it was between the village of Six Bells, a small village adjoining Abertillery to the south and the southern end of Abertillery itself.

The enumeration district mentions:  Pantyarrail, Cwmnanty, Rhiw Park, the Coach and Horses pub (still a Coach and Horses in the area though don't know if it's the original, or still open), and there is still a Pantypudding Road.  Most of the names described are still there in some form.  The main road from Six Bells to Abertillery is Alexander Road which then becomes Somerset Street in Abertillery.  Also too, there was a Somerset Hotel further along Somerset Street.  Can find no mention of Somerset House in a street atlas of the area but I think this is the right area.

If you search for Abertillery on Google maps, zoom in and Somerset Street soon appears.  Street View is available.

Thanks Pritch,
I'll have a look at your info, I was teetering towards Nantyglo because of Ponds? Row, but I guess there was a Ponds Row everywhere.

Thanks again,
Rob
