If anyone is able to do a look up for the Parish Register of St Samlet for me that would be most appreciated - details are

BAPTISMs

William LANGDON - born circa 1794, Llamsamlet.

-- be thrilled to learn details of parents' names, residence, occupation etc and if there's any x-reference to any other siblings to the same parents.   I think his dad could be called Humphrey but that's guesswork and no idea of mother's name.

I've already had confirmation that William married Rachel WILLIAM 17 Apr 1821 and that witnesses were John William and a John Fowey.

Rachel WILLIAM - born circa 1807 but it could have been earlier as this date makes her around 14 when she marries William [whilst he is substantially older, at ~ 27].

-- again, be great to learn of any details of parent's name/s, residence etc or any x-references to possible siblings. I had thought John William was her dad but not so sure now  :P

Known children all born Llansamlet and therefore likely baptised at St Samlet

          o Elizabeth Langdon ~ 1822
          o David ~ 1825
          o Mary ~ 1831 -- could there be other siblings between David/Mary?
          o Rachel ~ 1833
o William ~ 1838 - could there be another sibling or two between Rachel/William?

Cheers

Hi again,

Rachel WILLIAM - 2 contenders:

- baptised 06 October 1797, father Christmas (I'm not kidding!)

- baptised 18 March 1802, father William

I'm really hoping that the first one is yours, but I suspect it's the latter.

Regards,
Lee.

ps - I can find no baptisms for William's & Rachel's children.

lolll - I love it! 'father' Christmas.. hehehhehhee...

I'll dig around and see if I can find anything that will enable me to confirm which is the right one -- thanks ever so much Lee!.

Bad luck about their kids BP's but at least I have some info on other sibs for William so that's all good indeed...

No rush but if you have any chance to see if you can find anything on the father Humphrey - perhaps a marriage or death ot even a birth -- that would be awesome indeed...

Cheers and thanks again   ;D

In the 1851 census, Rachel's birthplace is given as SWANSEA which, if true, throws my last post into the shredder! Her age is given as 52 giving a birth year of circa 1798/9. This also tallies with the 1841 census which gives the age of both William and Rachel as 45 (real age 41 to 45).

Back to the drawing board!

Lee.

They seem to have lived Llansamlet all their lives but I can't find any 1841 census with an adult Christmas mentioned that might fit....

hmm... 1861 census places her as born St Thomas, Swansea so possible there might be a record of a baptism there for her....  Would you by any chance have any access to those ?

Possible Humphrey sighting!

Marriage between Humphrey LANGAN and Elizabeth TOPHAM 12 September 1779, by banns, at St Mary's Church, Swansea; both of parish.

"Humphrey" in South Wales is not quite as rare as hen's teeth but not far off, so one that has a surname close to LANGDON is worth taking seriously. William and Rachel show up as LONGTON quite regularly in the censuses.

Regards,
Lee.

Error - I should have written LONGDON not LONGTON.

Hi Lynda,

St Thomas Church was completed in about 1887 so prior to then, all church business for that area belonged to Swansea St Mary. BUT, looking at a map of the area, it seems possible that a person living just outside the then town area could live at an address known locally as St Thomas but be actually living in the Llansamlet (Lower) parish.

I can't find a Rachel WILLIAM baptism in Swansea St Mary that satisfies Rachel's age as given by the censuses so, perhaps, the best information we have is that Christmas is back on the agenda.

The closest St Mary baptisms that I can find are 2 in 1804 - pretty far out as far as the censuses' information is concerned.

Regards,
Lee.
