Hi Annie

I'm pleased the information was of interest.

William's service details were extracted from the CG Records in ADM 175, which can be downloaded for free from the National Archives website. However, these files are VERY LARGE!

The Crimean War info comes from a personal research project to identify the 2/3 thousand CG Men who served in the Navy. This has been done using Ships Description & Muster Books and the medal roll.

Finally, I believe Thomas entered the RN, because his service records pre and post 1873 can be downloaded (for a small fee) from the NA.  Please note the date column is the mans date of birth.

Hi Martin,
What a fascinating interest you have in CG men. It must have been an mentally exhausting challenge to track down that large no.

Hi Annie,
Do you have access to Census Records?
Would you like me to try and find any extra info on Ebbetts?

Trish :)

Hi Trish

There are times when I wished I had not started it  :D

Annie you could also look at the  GENUKI CG Site, because there are a few Ebbetts listed, and given the use of Frank Rogers as a christian name in 1851 this may tie in a brother to William.

Hi again Martin

Frank Rogers....well if those born in the UK weren't enough, there were another 4 Frank Rogers Ebbetts born here in NZ and I have found it confusing to say the least.  Another of their favourite names was John Harris and oh...lets not forget about William Wilkie!! :)  The Ebbetts really understood the meaning of naming patterns.  I was searching for my dad's merchant navy records at Kew, when I stumbled across the 3 coastguard Ebbetts, although I did notice that some of the information isn't quite correct and other bits are missing.  There was some information I didn't have however, so to get that was really great.
I will look at the record for Thomas, even if I have to pay....it isn't much.  Thanks again for all you help...Annie

Hi Trish...No I don't have access to the census....I always go to the library to search Ancestry.  Not a bad thing...gives me time to myself!!  However, if you are looking for something to do one  days, perhaps you might like to see if you can find Brooke and Charity Ebbett in the 1841 census....which come to think about it might be an impossible task because they will probably be married.  I will be in touch...in the meantime....thanks to all....Annie

Hi Martin....me again

My husband and I returned last year from a 5 year working holiday of the UK and while we were there, we spent a very pleasant few days at St Keverne.  There are only two Ebbetts buried in the St Keverne churchyard, being William Wilkins Ebbett and his wife Ann, nee Harris.  There was also an interesting memorial to their son Frank Rogers which I thought you might like to comment on:

HEADSTONE INSCRIPTION ST KEVERNE'S CHURCHYARD

William Ebbett
Died at St Keverne
December 16th 1886
Aged 77 years

Ann
Beloved wife of William
And affectionate mother
Died April 20th 1870
Aged 52 years

Also

Frank Ebbett
Died with the smallpox
5th January 1872
aged 21 years
buried latitude 6 degrees north
longitude 55 degrees west

Where did he die and what do you think he was doing there?

Kind regards....Annie

Hi Annie

6N 55W are the coordinates for Paramaribo in Surinam, a country I've never even heard of in South America, with boarders to Guyana and Brazil.

Given that the family has such a maritime tradition one would have to guess that he was a sailor. Another Member of the Forum might have a subscription to Findmypast, and be able to throw more light on his death.

I believe Frank Ebbett died from Smallpox whilst aboard the SS Medway.  don't have any other information but this might help.
Cheers

Seeing this has been revived :)

Marriages from Familysearch Pilot;

FRANK ROGERS Ebbet, 12 May 1820, St James the Apostle, Dover, Kent
to Sarah Deborah MILLS

ROBERT Ebbett, 19 November 1829, St James the Apostle, Dover, Kent
to Sarah Kingsley GASSON

This might be Brook;
SARAH BROOKS Ebbett, 22 January 1814, St James the Apostle, Dover, Kent
to John PARTRIDGE

Burial;
Charity EBBETT, 18 March 1855, St Mary Parish, Dover, Kent, Age 52, born c 1803.
I think she is a Servant age 48 in St Mary the Virgin, Dover, Kent in 1851 under ABBOT. It all fits with Burial.

Looking for William Wilkins Ebbett I found your posts and I think the families are linked. I think my  family is descended from William Wilkins by his first wife Sarah Maria Best . They had a son Joseph William Ebbett born 9 July 1838. No idea where Sarah might be buried or when she died. He ( the son) was  a Master Mariner marrying Elizabeth Ann Shaw from St Mawes in Cornwall. They had 10 children one of whom according to family records married William Henry Ebbett from the second wife's family in 1899. They had a son Reginald. If you pick this up I would be fascinated to know if this fits your records?
