Help finding gunner in Canada
« on: Sunday 27 June 10 01:35 BST (UK) »
I am trying to determine where a gunner served in Canada.  His name is Richard James.  I found his discharge papers and they say that he served in Canada for 10 3/4 years of his 14 year military career.  He served from 2 Mar 1833 until 25 May 1847.  He was a gunner and driver, No. 5 Company, 3rd Regiment, Royal Artillery.  (I hope I put that correctly).  While in Canada, he married and had a son, but I do not know where.  I am hoping someone might be able to help me find out where he served and a little more about the conditions in which he served.

I am still trying to locate information about Richard James.  His discharge papers say that he was discharged 30 April 1847 in Canada from the 3rd Bat. of Royal Regiment or Corps of Artillery.  Does anyone know where this unit might have been in April 1847 or who its commander might have been?

Hi David

You need WO10/1959 which is his units muster book for 1847 (April to September). It will tell you where he was month by month. It is in the National Archives, not online.

Thank you, Ken.   Now that I know what I am looking for, I will see if I can find a researcher there to help me.
