Hi,

I haven't found a lot more to link the families but I have a few dates that might come in handy later on if you expand on the family.

1841 Martha Hiscox age 3 is in the household of William Clarke 50, Eliza 25 and James 15, no relationships given but possibly Eliza and James are children of William and Martha could be the daughter of Eliza.  Batcombe

1851 Martha Hiscox is living at Batcombe with James and his wife Fanny their daughter Elizabeth 8 and nephew John aged 12 and father William Clarke 73.
She is described as niece which would make her the granddaughter of William Clarke, thus the daughter of Eliza.  Martha is age 13 born Bath.  I cannot find a Bath registered birth but there is one for Martha Maria Hiscox 4/1837 Shepton Mallet which would cover Batcombe.

In 1861 Martha is living in Batcombe with the Vallis couple and possibly her daughter Sarah Hiscox aged 2.  Birth reg. 2/1859 Shepton Mallet  Is this history repeating tself with illegitimate  children.

More to follow

Continued

I have found a few deaths at Batcombe which may tie in with the Clarkes and Hiscox families.

7.7.1839 Elizabeth Clarke d. of Eliza Clarke age 10weeks
13.9.1849  Mary Ann Clarke age 37
16.7.1855 John Clarke age 16
16.5.1860 James Clarke age 37
6.10.1874 William Clarke age 88

1.4.1865 John Clarke from Yeovil age 46

25.2.1841 Sarah Hiscox age 27
5.4.1841 Sarah Hiscox age 2

Unfortunately, I haven't found the Batcombe baptisms yet but I think they may hold a few useful dates.

This doesn't help much with the Vallis family as per your original post but it might fill in the backgroung information.

It would seem that Eliza Clarke gave birth to:
Martha Hiscox (Father's name perhaps) 1837
Elizabeth Clarke cApril 1839

John Clarke  c1838/9  No positive birth registration or definite son of Eliza
Need access to the baptisms.

and Martha gave birth to (That we know about)

Sarah Hiscox 2/1859  Shepton Mallet
Harry Hiscox 1/1862  Wincanton
Charles Hiscock 3/1863  Wincanton

Referrring to the baptism you found for Charles Vallis 1874, is it possible that James was the father and they decided to acknowledge the paternity at this late stage in Charles life by having him baptised.  It is also possible that James and Louisa Vallis had a son called James who was the father of Charles and Harry.

It is a bit of mystery but I am sure with careful research, it will be sorted.
Regards,
Elizabeth

Hi again,

Have you joined the Yahoo Hundreds groups for research.  They can be very useful as they have transcriptions for specific areas.  E.g. Whitstone covers Batcombe and though only the burials are available online, someone may have the baptisms for transcribing and be willing to do a look up for you.

Best of luck with your search,
Elizabeth
