EMIGRATION FROM HELMDON TO USA: Mark & Sarah SOUTH
« on: Friday 25 June 10 23:32 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how I could find out when and on what ship my ancestors Mark & Sarah South left England for the United States? I haven't been able to find an immigration record here in the USA and I thought perhaps they came to Canada. Any kind word of advice on how to solve this problem would be much appreciated.

Could you give us an idea of when they were born and when they might have gone to America- is thus the Mark South (b.1817) on your other thread?

Using the birth of their children as a guide, I believe my ancestors MARK AND SARAH SOUTH emigrated to the US some time between 1843 and 1852 at the latest. Their daughter ELIZABETH's birth in January 1843 was in Helmdon but their next child, SARAH M. born in 1848 I'm not sure if she was born in England or Illinois, where they first lived in the U.S. The next child SOPHIA born in 1852 according to U.S. census records was born in Illinois. My guess is they came to the U.S. some time between 1843 and 1848 but as mentioned may have been as late as 1852.

Thanks very much.

Ah, Mark and Sarah's emigration has to be between 1843 and 1850 then, when I looked through my old census records, the 1850 page had been stuck to the page before it...alas, what small things can make a big difference! Thank you.

Hi again.

Sarah's baptism was also at Helmdon on 08 Jun 1817 and mother
was Elizabeth (illegitimate).
