Thank you for the information LancsLass.  You are absolutely correct about John and his son Anthony.  This Anthony came to the US and listed his parents in a biography after he became a successful businessman.  John and Mary baptized their children at St. Peters and they were married at St Mary.  That suggests to me that their (John and Ann's) baptism would be at one or both of those churches, although that is just a guess.  I will also try to look into the Middleton and other churches nearby.  Thank you for that hint.  Not living nearby, I sometimes don't know which churches are close by.  I also saw the birth of Anthony in the freesearch website, but wonder if someone raised in a non-Church of England church would have baptized their children in a Church of England.  I would presume that he would have been rebaptized himself if he changed churches.  It does provide an opportunity though.

Hi David....No problem, i have Weslyian Methodist Ancestors, they Baptised their children in their own Chapels, but marriages had to be in a Church of England Church or later at a Register Office
Other faiths also had to marry at Church of England..or Registrar attended at this time.
Tonge  was actually between Chadderton & Middleton, its an area now called Mills Hill on the border of both towns, so St leonards is a possibility although there is a small Methodist Chapel at Mills Hill (passed it yesterday) Were they Methodists by any chance..? It looks quite old and they have their own Burial Ground.

I really don't know anything about their faith.  I only found out about the English relatives this last year.  John and Ann (Ogden) appear to have baptized all of their children in St Peters, but I have little further information on either John or Ann, except their marriage and now John's father's name.  I was told that the family was weavers from several generations back.  I have found out that both Clegg and Ogden are very common names in Oldham!
