Chadderton - CLEGG baptism
« on: Friday 25 June 10 06:57 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on the parents/family of John Clegg, who declared in the censuses that he was born about 1794 in Chadderton.  He lived in Oldham and Tonge the rest of his life.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Modified:  Marriage records show John's father was Anthony Clegg, a weaver.  Now looking for baptism or other source to provide more information.]

Hi and welcome to rootschat :)

Have you looked on the IGI for his birth/baptism in the parish regs of churches near Chadderton?

You can find the IGI on the LDS [ Mormons] site,..... familysearch.
It's free.

Thank you.  I have looked for his baptism on Familysearch, but not successfully.  There were several John Cleggs baptized in Oldham, but none listed in Chadderton.  I also have to admit that I am not certain of which churches are near Chadderton.  There appear to be a lot of churches in the area.

Hullo again ;D

there is a website called something like "IGI Batch numbers"   If you can find that and go to Lancs and Chadderton it will tell you which churches in that area have records on IGI.  Just click on the link and search.

I'll see if I can dig out the link ::)

Hiya ....go to
www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html
put in John Clegg   1794   and 2 years either way....there are 8 results....can`t see a Chadderton babtism , but you may recognise a village / town close enough to have the babtism there...
Don`t forget that families would go to their family church...ALL my family have been christened in St Michaels , Garston ....even though they had moved up to 10 miles away....as far as we are concerned it`s OUR church....so just maybe he WASN`T babtised in Chadderton .....allan :)

Thank you both, Allen and Charlotte.  I am used to looking up family in small villages, which makes things much easier.

I checked the IGI records, but it noted that the records contained multiple locations that were not close to each other.  Using mapquest, I looked up several options in the Lancashire On-Line Parish and determined several were 40 minutes away by car, which I removed as options.  I also removed the non-Church of England options because John and Ann's children were all baptized in that denomination.

I found a John Clegg baptized in Shaw Chapel in Oldham in Dec 1795 (@ 3.5 miles away), but his alleged father was a plaisterer, which appears to be someone who finishes the walls.  Since one of John's sons notes in his biography that the family has been in cotton for several generations, I removed him (at least for the time being).  The other John Clegg baptized in the same church (which I also found positive because the father was a weaver) notes he was born in Dec 1797.

I guess I will continue looking....  BUT, thank you for the help!  I really do appreciate it.

In John Clegg's marriage records (for his second marriage), he lists his father as Anthony Clegg, a cotton weaver.

Hi Not sure if this is of any help or not.
There is a Baptism at St Peter's Oldham
3 August 1823
Anthony Clegg..son of John Clegg & Ann of Northmoor.
Occupation: Weaver.
Child 2 yrs old.

LDS film. 1656068

Could this be the John Clegg you have, perhaps naming his son after his father..?
There are not that many Churches in the Chadderton area with very early records, most built after  the population grew from Cotton.
St Pauls,Royton (next to Chadderton) has Baptisms from 1755-1919.Marriages 1839-1909)
Holy Trinity,Shaw (or Shaw Chapel as it was known earlier)
Baptisms  1653-1965, Marriages 1695-1752, 1836-1889.
St Mary,Oldham
Bapt:1538-1902.
Marriages:1558-1920.
St Peters Oldham
Baptisms: 1768-1961
If your Clegg's lived in the lower section of Chadderton its possible they used St Leonards,Middleton. It is near Tonge and close to Chadderton.
Regards..LancsLass

P.S.     Freesearch has a birth at Oldham (or Baptism) 10/11/1763
Anthony Clegg..son of Anthony Clegg and Ann.
As you give 1794 as the year of birth for your John Clegg this Anthony could be of age to be his father......
