Hi Not sure if this is of any help or not.
There is a Baptism at St Peter's Oldham
3 August 1823
Anthony Clegg..son of John Clegg & Ann of Northmoor.
Occupation: Weaver.
Child 2 yrs old.
LDS film. 1656068
Could this be the John Clegg you have, perhaps naming his son after his father..?
There are not that many Churches in the Chadderton area with very early records, most built after the population grew from Cotton.
St Pauls,Royton (next to Chadderton) has Baptisms from 1755-1919.Marriages 1839-1909)
Holy Trinity,Shaw (or Shaw Chapel as it was known earlier)
Baptisms 1653-1965, Marriages 1695-1752, 1836-1889.
St Mary,Oldham
Bapt:1538-1902.
Marriages:1558-1920.
St Peters Oldham
Baptisms: 1768-1961
If your Clegg's lived in the lower section of Chadderton its possible they used St Leonards,Middleton. It is near Tonge and close to Chadderton.

P.S. Freesearch has a birth at Oldham (or Baptism) 10/11/1763
Anthony Clegg..son of Anthony Clegg and Ann.
As you give 1794 as the year of birth for your John Clegg this Anthony could be of age to be his father......
