Initial guess of South Lancs Regiment however could do with a close up of the cap badge...cant see any stripes so suspect a Private

I'd go along with Ady...With the added int that this was taken either 1916/7. He may have either a PH hood haversack, but it may well be a SBR haversack. The SBR being the Small Box Respirator...Gas Mask

The PH haversack had x3 bras buttons which I would expect to be visible on the strap.

Again a higher def scan would be very useful....Pse see the hints and tips on the Photo Restoration board

Thanks Ady and Scrimnet

I know the gentleman in question suffered from the effects of a gas attack during the war, from which he never fully recovered, so it would fit in.

It would seem unusual to my untrained eye to have two men sitting for a photo together like this.  Was this usual, or is it likely that they were brothers/cousins.

I will try to get a better resolution picture for you tomorrow, but thanks again for your efforts so far.

Nick

This pic was taken in France/Flanders....It was cheaper for x2 mates to get a pic done rather than one on  is own...! There are loads about like this...
