Amberley, there's some history of Withington/Chorlton workhouse (same place in later years) on The Workhouse website:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
Until fairly recently it was still in operation as Withington Hospital (there are still some buildings used for outpatients etc, though the main blocks have been demolished).

Hi
I have found burial entries for Withington Workhouse on findmypast but wondered if anyone knew what the different departments were?
One child died and the department is given as 4a and the other died a couple of weeks later and the department looks like Cott.
