union workhouse, withington.

Could anyone please advise me how to find out information on a relative who died in the above.  I received the death cert today & was most surprised to find that's where he had died.  I was wondering if info was available on why he died there & how long he'd been there etc?  If this sort of info is available where will I find it please?   Thanks, Amberly.

HI, it might be worth giving Greater Manchester county records office either a phone call or email, asking them if they hold any record or have access to any records for the workhouse while Central library Manchester is closed for refurbishments? I know they are allowing access to a few records they normally don't have access to but have for this short time period.

Thanks to both Dazey999 & Mr. MIGKY for such prompt replies.  I had discovered that the Archives were closed for renos & was just wondering what to do when Mr. MIGKY responded, so I shall now e-mail & see what they say.

Email maybe the way then, then if they do have further details maybe ask if any one is going in the near future for a look up?

Hi Matt.   Yes I've found out they are available at Manchester Archives & Local Studies, however you have to go & look them up in person & since you & I don't live in the UK this will be impossible for me, but maybe easier for you, at least you're in Europe!  I went on line & found the Interment Registers for Withington Workhouse & there are various headings with numbers so that if you want to hire someone there to look them up for you it's possible, however it's not particularly cheap.  So you look under Death Registers for the relevant date, & then under Creed Register & then under Interment Register & you'll get a number for each of these, to enable you to know where to look.   BUT you can't do anymore than that on-line as far as I can tell.    So now I have to try & find someone who maybe lives nearby & will go & do this for me.    Anyway good luck!  If I have success I'll let you know.  If you find a way please let me know.

Hi again Matt,
Forgot to say that I did e-mail the GMCRO like Mr MIGKY suggested, but so far they have not replied, so although I've found all the relative numbers for locating the files I still don't know where or if they can be located during the refurbishment of the building.   Will let you know when the GMCRO reply & what they say.

Just phoned GMCRO to see if they had access to the records while Manchester library was closed for refurbishments but forgot that they are shut all day Wensdays Doh!  ::)
