A.E. Foster, artist?
« on: Monday 21 June 10 18:30 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find out about a possible British artist named, A. E. Foster. A found a stream of conversation by a "ChinaKey" and a "Clivealbert" related to it but can't seem to find out how to contact them. Does anyone have any history on this person, for a research project of mine?

Hi, Yankee1, I hope you got my 2 replies. the person in the painting by AE Foster was my great grandfather John reynolds b1868 Northamptonshire d1896 Ilkeston derbyshire. As far as I know John, who was a coal miner never left Ilkeston, he married Lois Henshaw, and was killed in a roof fall 1896.
how he knew AE Foster and why the paintings, one water colour and one oil were done I do not know my aunt has the oil painting.
Best wishes clive

Hi, Yankee1, my sister has sent me a camera phone photo of the painting by AE Foster, I have no means of putting it on the Rootschat site. If you send me a PM with your address I will post iot to you and if you can then put it on Rootschat to show those who did a brilliant job of the watercolour. My gt. grandfather was killed in 1896,he may be on the 1891 census in Ilkeston. I dont know his first names.
 Best Wishes Clive

Thanks for the update. Any scribbling on back of oil painting? How old was your dad at the time? Water color looks terrific. Neat mystery. Will try to find out more about my painting today. Will try to match signatures with your picture. 1907 versus your date 1868 plus 25 say equals 1893. He died awfully young. Aye?

Hi Yankee 1

I also have a painting by the artist A E Foster. It is an oil painting of an elderly couple harvesting what I think is wheat, in the backgrond is a red brick farmhouse and a large oak tree, to the right of the house is another building just showing the gable ends. There is writing on the back on the frame, saying
Harvest   Meadowside  Didsbury  by A E Foster 1927.   This maybe the area he lived and worked.

Hope this is some help to you.

Would it be worth looking up A E Foster Didsbury in the 1901/1911 censuses, or have you tried this already?
