Marriage Lookup Please - St Mary's Woodbridge
« on: Monday 21 June 10 10:14 BST (UK) »
Hello - I would very much appreciate if someone could look up the pr's for the marriage of two ladies around the same time; I would very much like to confirm if they were sisters, so I was hoping either the witness' for the marriage or the parent named on the register would be the same for each - I got the basic info from the IGI:

Elizabeth TITSHALL marriage to William OVERETT 08-Nov-1824
(the IGI has a bp for Elizabeth daughter of Richard Titshall and Sarah 22-06-1794

I would very much like to see if this lady was her sister:

Maria TITSHALL marriage to Edward ARCHER 13-Apr-1827

thank you for your help.

regards Karen (New Zealand)

Hi Karen,

From Phillimores (doesn't give you much extra I am afraid)

William Ovrett, postillion m Elizabeth Titshall 8 Nov 1824 (had to look up a definition of postillion and got the following from 'The Free Dictionary' - One who rides the near horse of the leaders to guide the horses drawing a coach.)

Edward Archer, blacksmith m Maria Titshall 13 Apr 1827

The only other marriage of mention in Woodbridge is the following.
John Threadkell, miller of Melton m Hannah Titshall by licence 17 Oct 1811

Totally by the way - I seem to recall that the late British actor Dirk Bogarde wrote a biography entitled 'A Postillion Struck by Lightning'.
In an interview at the time I think it had something to do with a text book of useful phrases in French - as in, my postillion has been struck be lightening'!
Not much call for that one today I guess  ::)

Pat ...

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

Thank you very much for that lookup Sean, I appreciate you took the time and it's more interesting because of the occupations of the grooms;  I can't find Edward and Maria Archer in the 1841 census anywhere but if they had children one of their sons' could've also been a blacksmith...so there's a clue to an Archer who was a blacksmith maybe.  Also the postillion...I'd heard the word too, but only in a vague way.  (Pat, you have a wicked sense of humour   :D)  I wonder if William had a stable somewhere in the town.

The reason for my look up request is that I'm trying to match up Maria Titsall (servant) in 1816 Woodbridge Pallots bp for her son William, with somebody...well anybody.... any family will do.... ;)

Hi Karen,
Richard Titshall and Sarah Fairweather did have a daughter Mary born 1796, Hacheston, Suffolk.
Could she have been known as Maria?

So William Gooch TITSHALL was born c 1816 to Maria ?
Married Jane, no Fathers name on Marriage Cert/ do you have it?
I noticed a family Tree with maiden name for Jane;
Was she Jane HOMAN?
Marriage, September 1843, Kensington, 3 305, William TITSHALL on same page is Jane Homan
(OOPS, just noticed name Homan on your surname table after I posted)

The only Edward Archer I can find, Blacksmith was possibly a Widower by 1841 unfortunately ::)

1841 Census
Hasketon, Suffolk
HO107/1020/9/Hasketon

Edward ARCHER, 45, Blacksmith
Sarah, 13
Henry, 10

Hi Trish, thanks for that and yes I've finally been able to see a marriage registration image this week for William and Jane,...it does have father of William Gooch Titshall as William Titshall,  Painter and Glazier.  Janes father Joseph Homan's occupation is bricklayer.    The registration entry for his first marriage in 1838 to Sarah Rayner has his father as 'William Gooch Titshall' ; that's transcribed not off an image.  Now, according to Pallots index William is noted as illeg. and Maria a servant.

I was always very interested that William Gooch Titshall was in Brentford in 1841 census  - I lived there 12 years myself before I found out after coming back to NZ....woe is me!   I'm wondering if his mother Maria could either  been married to Edward Archer or if as you say maybe she's Mary (dau of Rich'd and Sarah Fairweather) married to William Carr.

The other option is that Gooch could be Maria's surname and I've found that a mother's maiden name is often used as a middle name for a son.  Have that in another couple of families.

in the IGI for Woodbridge there's a Maria Gooch married to Robert Cana 1817 - they had a daughter Mary Maria in 1818.  I'll be following that up too.

Anyway all this family history research in Suffolk is proving interesting to me; and makes a change from my NZ family history. ;D

Thanks again

regards Karen

Hi Karen

Looked up in my Millers db and located the following (as there might be a milling connection):-

there were Titshalls milling at following:-  Marlesford (5 miles from W'bridge), Parham (ditto), Redlingfield (20 miles), Alderton (5 miles), Dennington (10 miles) & Hacheston (5 miles).

If your interested send me PM and I'll forward you details, names dates etc.  If I don't reply it cos I'm really busy at mo... but I will get back to you.

Hi everyone
I'm Hilda from Melbourne, my mum was born an Overett and we trace her line directly back to William Overett and Elizabeth Titshall, so I am reading all this research with great interest.Mum's Overett was a later descendant William who went to Montrose Scotland where her dad was bor in 1892.Hope this is of interest to researchers.

                     regards, Hilda.
