McGrugan Family - Parkgate, Antrim
« on: Friday 18 June 10 22:45 BST (UK) »
I'm researching around the McGrugan family starting with William John McGrugan (1847-1914). Parents James McGrugan & Sarah Murphy.
He married Martha Millar in 1869 in Antrim.
They appear to have had a family of 7 children:
Sarah J, John, William, Hugh, Mary Ann, Alexander & George.
They lived in Parkgate village (Moyadam, Donegore, Antrim) at the turn of the 20th century.
Any help greatly appreciated.
McGrugan, Beck, Kirk, Lockhart.
Moyadam, Parkgate, Doagh

Hi Craig,
My Name is Andrew Nesbitt Keys I'm from Coleraine but I live in London.
I've been doing quite a lot of family history research recently and came across your post after searching the name McGrugan on goggle.
The William John McGrugan in your post is my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather and Martha Millar is my Gt Gt Gt grandmother on my maternal side.
I was unware of the previous generation with James McGrugan & Sarah Murphy.
You have the name Mary Ann as 1 of the children but I have it as Martha (my Gt Gt Grandmother) who married a Blacksmith from Parkgate called Alexander Nesbitt (my Gt Gt Grandfather).
One of there Children was a William John Nesbitt (My Gt Grandfather) who presumably got his name from his maternal Grandfather. William John was a decorated WW1 veteran, lying about his age in order to recruit he was wounded twice at the Battle of the Somme and eventually taken prisoner by the Enemy and spending 1 1/2 Years in POW camp in Germany. After the Great War he was railway clerk, In the Home Guard and helped found a local British Legion Branch in the Parkgate area. He died in 1973. A cousin of his called McNee was killed in WW1.
He and his wife Catherie Boak had many children one was called James Nesbitt (my grandfather) he was a Teacher and the School Master at Parkgate at one point. He Married a May Smyth from Carnlough (my Grandmother) and they had 4 Children. She died a year and a half ago but my Granda Nesbitt is 86 and lives in Castlerock. There daughter Kathryn Nesbitt Is my Mother and their Son, my Uncle James Nesbitt (Jnr) is the famous actor.
I recently asked My Granda Nesbitt what he knew about the McGrugan's and he was under the impression that there wasn't many of you's left! And he is convinced the name is a mispelling variation and was orginally McGuigan.

Thanks

Hi,

Some of my family were from Parkgate and I was recently given a copy of the First Donegore marriage and birth records.  I had a quick look through for McGrugans.  There's several around the 1960-80s, maybe a bit recent to mention here.

I doubt if any of this will be new to youse, but here's the earliest ones I can see:

14/08/1896: Alexander Nesbitt, Holestone, blacksmith married Martha McGrugan, Moyadam, aged 20.  Groom's father William Nesbitt, labourer.  Bride's father William John McGrugan.  Witnesses Thomas Tweed, Sarah Jane McGrugan.  The wedding took place at Mary Crawford's Father's house.

^ Your gg grandparents Andrew.  Sounds like you already know the details.  This one is unusual as the age of the bride is normally only given as "Full" or "Minor".  The location is unusual too.

11/10/1901: Andrew Ross Nesbitt, Craigrogan, workman married Sarah Jane McGrugan, Four Mile Burn.  Groom's father Alexander Nesbitt, labourer.  Bride's father William John McGrugan, labourer.  Witnesses James Nesbitt and Sarah Nesbitt.  Location First Donegore.

28/3/1902: William John McGrugan, Thrushfield, labourer married Anna Eliza Graham, Silversprings.  Groom's father William Jphn McGrugan, labourer.  Bride's father William Graham, farmer.  Witnesses John McGrugan and Lizzie Nesbitt.  Location First Donegore. (Thrushfield and Silversprings are right next to each other, on the SE side of Parkgate)
