There were a couple more T Kavanagh names on the Boer War index on Ancestry, one in the Lancashire Fusiliers , killed at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900, the other wounded at Ameersfoort on 29 June 1900 of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

Modified:  from the photograph I took of the monument at Spion Kop that Kavanagh appears to be J Kavanagh - Regimental Number 5406 Lancashire Fusiliers.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Have you tried checking Irish Censuses in 1901 and 1911 or in Scotland? It is possible your Grandfather Thomas Kavanagh returned home or went north of the border.

Worth a try.

Another angle to consider is: emigration to somewhere possibly the US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Even Africa (especially South Africa).

Please do not give up. I am sure one of these days you will get them!
