I cannot understand why his death or Joseph Edward's cannot be found. I appear to be very unlucky to have lost two great grandfathers'

I'm wondering of Thomas just disappeared and with so many variations of the name can not be traced easily.
I've not looked for Joseph edward yet. When was he last seen?

in short, not with him.
He had only one daughter, Josephine Johnson born 1901 Darlington,  and i found out that in 1911 she was living with her aunt in Stockton on Tees after her mother died.
Since Joseph E was single again he could have ended up anywhere i guess and started a new family.

If you get desperate enough (you have to be desperate to do exactly what I did last night!!) - sit down for a few hours and actually read the indexes.

I pulled them up on FindMyPast and managed to "kill off" at least seven people that I couldn't find records for.  They were there in the indexes, but incorrectly transcribed by FreeBMD and the records weren't picked up by soundex searches.

The volunteer transcribers couldn't be blamed at all, in some cases "r" looked like "s" in the scans the transcribers were working from, but I happened to know who I was looking for, what I was looking for, and in what geographical area.

You can pull up the indexes for ten-year periods, just put in at least the first two letters of the name you're looking for.

Very tedious but worthwhile in the end.
England: Noller, Benham, Newson, Ling, Sunley, Hampson, Allport
Ireland: Johnston, Bamford, Craig, McQuoid
Scotland: Anderson
Canada and the U.S.:  All of the above!

Well that is probably what happened.
There is a  marriage 1908 Darlington and Joseph Johnsons in 1911 but whether or not any of them are him... who knows?

good luck
