If you get desperate enough (you have to be desperate to do exactly what I did last night!!) - sit down for a few hours and actually read the indexes.
I pulled them up on FindMyPast and managed to "kill off" at least seven people that I couldn't find records for. They were there in the indexes, but incorrectly transcribed by FreeBMD and the records weren't picked up by soundex searches.
The volunteer transcribers couldn't be blamed at all, in some cases "r" looked like "s" in the scans the transcribers were working from, but I happened to know who I was looking for, what I was looking for, and in what geographical area.
You can pull up the indexes for ten-year periods, just put in at least the first two letters of the name you're looking for.
Very tedious but worthwhile in the end.
