anyone going to the West Yorkshire record office??
« on: Friday 04 June 10 22:45 BST (UK) »
Hello:

Is anyone going the the record office in the near future?  If so, I am wondering if they could do a newspaper look up for me regarding a inquest report.

I have just received the death certificate for  my great Uncle Alfred Thompson who died in 1938. My dad always said his Uncle Alf was shot, as he was a gamekeeper and they did not know if it was an accident or if he was shot by poachers as he was out looking for them

On his death certificate it states than an inquest was held on the 11th of March 1938, the coroners names was Edgar Wood.

Date of death is 9th March 1939  at Brick Cottage Plantation  Askwith.   I am not sure what newspaper it would be in.

Thank you very much for any help.

Cheers
Anne

Hi

I think Askwith is just over the West Yorkshire border and is in North Yorkshire.
I don't know the papers in that area but you could try the Yorkshire Post. Micro films are at the Leeds library, local history department.

I was in the Huddersfield library and I had a look in the local papers and they did not mention a shooting or an inquest. The local papers usually mention any murders but don't always mention accidents and suicides.
Can you also clarify which date you are looking for March 1938 or March 1939.

Hello John:

thank you for having a look for me.  Alfred Thompson died on 9th March 1938 and it states the inquest was held on 11th March 1938.

Just had a good look at what it states: Certificated received from Edgar Wood Coronor for Craven District of Yorkshire. Inquest held 11th of March 1938.

Thank you again.

Cheers
Anne

Hi

I managed to find him in the Yorkshire Post but it doesn't give a lot of information.
A further problem is Askwith and the Craven District is in North Yorkshire but the nearest town was Otley which is in West Yorkshire and then he was born Driffield which is know in East Yorkshire.
I will send you a transcript of the articles I have found but a paper from the other areas might give you a bit more info.

When did he die & how old was he?

Just a suggestion, but it might be a good idea if you amend the title of your first post [only you can do that as it is your topic] to include Alfred's name & cemetery lookup. Eg 'Burial of Alfred Thompson in Otley 1945' then we chatters know from the main rootschat page with titles if it may be something we can help with.
