Robert Reid help please
« on: Thursday 17 June 10 19:48 BST (UK) »
ok this is a tricky one in that I dont have much information, my grandfather brother is Robert reid. I dont know where he was born but died in st helens, his brother also lived in st helens so I would assume they were born there so I am looking for robert reid and his brother albert e reid.

no record for st helens for either of them, but an albert e reid is born in wigan 1915, shows mothers maiden name as davies and there are a few other children in the marriage but no robert!

there is a robert reid born 1911 in wigan, mothers maiden named howarth.....no other siblings.....so no brother robert! ???

Did I miss something? Robert Reid died in st helens but i cant remember if it was a burial or cremation, but their is no record of either burial or cremation, I am sure the death was in the 80's, as I was in my early teens.

this man is a mystery, he never married, no children, but did serve in the military during the war and I was told he was a prisoner of war, and was well travelled serving in egypt, india and held POW i believe in burma, tho I am not 100 %.

can someone point me where to look or have any info on him, only other bit of info I have before his death is his address in st helens

thanks

Hi Findmyfamily

Going off what Allan has found the Robert Reid is listed on Freebmd with a GRO reference of March 1911 District Wigan Vol 8c p146.

Hoping against hope that he was born at the beginning of the quarter and not at the end I checked out the 1911 census and there is a Robert Reid aged 2 months listed on the alphabetical search for the census, district Wigan.  Go to www.1911census.co.uk for the free search and then if you have registered and got credit you can ask for the transcript and/or original image of the census.

There is a marriage listed too on Freebmd with these 2 names on the same page and volume -
John Reid
Elizabeth Davies
December quarter of 1910 GRO reference vol 8c p 4 again Wigan district

I cant see the marriage on Lancashire bmd - perhaps not one transcribed yet - but going to the GRO you will get a copy of the original registry entry, whereas with the actual registrar's office you will get a transcribed copy.

As a postscript Albert E Reid's birth is registered at the GRO courtesy of www.freebmd.org.uk as December quarter1915 Wigan vol 8c p 233 Mothers Maiden Name Davies

Hello

This all needs to be checked but I believe that the following link possibly shows John Reid (the father of Robert and Albert E Reid) on the 1881 census, with his parents, even though the surname is spelled wrong .....

1881 Census - Reed

His wife, Elizabeth Davies does not appear on the 1881 census since she was not born until 1885, but I believe that this link possibly shows her parents .....

1881 Census - Davies

If you ever do find he was a POW, then you can apply for  records of his time as a POW from the international red cross.
