Anthony Forster baptism lookup - Winlaton/Ryton
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 22:48 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a baptism record for Anthony Forster from Winlaton/Ryton I have varying years of birth

1841 census has him as born abt 1797
1851 census has him as born abt 1790
1861 census is missing
1863 Death has his age as 75 giving him a birth year as 1788

I have ruled out Anthony Forster baptised 16 Apr 1797 parents George Forster Elizabeth Slater, he died aged 8 in 1805.

Anthony Forster owned a Corn mill in Blaydon Burn and I have been advised that the Forsters had a mill at Blaydon Burn from the early 1700's so can only assume that Anthony's mill was inherited rather than bought.  Therefore all my assumptions point me in the direction that Anthony was born in the Winlaton/Ryton vicinity, although I know that this doesn't mean he was baptised there or baptised at all.

If anyone can help me find a baptism for Anthony I would be most grateful.

Kind Regards

Emma

If they were wealthy then looking for wills may be helpful.  They often give enough detail to sort out family relationships.

Alan,

I'll look into that one, thanks.

Andrea

I think I will have to get a copy of the will, his son inherited Black Callerton colliery from him that bit I do know.  His wife and 2 youngest daughters are all listed on Census with occupation independent or own means so there must have been a few spare pennies about after his death.

Kind Regards

Please, I need to know more about the son who inherited Black Callerton. Are you related?
Anthony was my ancestor , and though I've researched this family for years, I know nothing of a surving son, although I have never found a death recorded for John b. 1823.

There is no will that I am aware of , although my great grandmother did inherit his grandfather clock.

Anthony is the 3x Great Grandfather of my Husband.  He being descended from Anthony’s daughter Ann.

It was Septimus who inherited the colliery and he died in 1880 and the collier was then in the hand of his Executors.

I have sent off to probate for a will, so will let you know what they come back with.  They have cashed my cheque so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I believe that John was still around when the family moved to Black callerton as his name is given as a contact in the newspaper when Anthony was wanting to rent out the Corn Mill etc when he moved to callerton.  I'll dig out the info when I get home.

Who do you descend from, was it Matthew?
Do you have any details of a birth/christening for Anthony?  I am still at a loss to who his parents were and am also wondering where the Dorothy Douglas name came from.

Any pointers would be much appreciated

Regards

Hello Emma
I am so thrilled. I thought that we were the only one's left. We too are descended from Ann , and Thomas Henderson the Butcher. Of their 10 children, I have only been able to find out a little about Thomas 1859 , and ofcoarse my Great Grandmother Margaret.
I have no record of Anthony's birth , but believe him to be the 7th child of John Forster and Margaret Cowper.

I think I do know where Dorothy Douglas came from , though why, I don't know!! Mary Cowen had a great Aunt called Dorothy Cowen, who married an Edward Douglas. Maybe she was a favourite, or a benefactor.

I wonder if Anthony ever managed to rent out the corn mill. He advertised for ages!

I think you and I have a lot to talk about. I would especially like to hear of your feelings about Mary's brother Sir Jospeh Cowen. Anthony , I gather, came to loathe the man.

Looking forward to hearing from you. How on earth did you track down his will. I've searched until I'm cross eyed?

I too believe that Anthony is the son of John Forster and Margaret Cowper, however I believe that he was possibly the 5th or 6th son as Septimus would traditionally be the 7th son and if you look at the children below he is currently the 6th son, 8th child.

Margaret 10 April 1774 at Bywell St Peter
William  27 May 1775 at Bywell St Andrew presume died before 1780
Ann 30 June 1776 at Bywell St Andrew
John 12 Apr 1778 at Bywell St Andrew d 2 Sept 1781at Winlaton
William 12 Jan 1780 at Bywell St Andrew d 25 Aug 1781 at Winlaton
William 28 Dec 1785 at Ryton of Winlaton Forster's Burn
Adam 1 Aug 1790 at Ryton of Winlaton Forster's Burn d 7 Mar 1872 at Blaydon Burn aged 82
Septimus 2 Jun 1793 at Ryton of Winlaton Forster's Burn
Benjamin 24 Jul 1796 at Ryton of Winlaton Forster's Burn d 20 Sep1796 of Forster's Burn

I managed to catch your email address before it was removed by the moderator so I will send you some more info.  My Hubby descends from Thomas & Anns son George (the butcher)

I can't say I have a will yet, but on the kind advice on this thread I took the plunge and sent off to probate to see if they have one.
