What Does Inmate Mean?
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 22:15 BST (UK) »
On my relative, Ann Cobb's, death certificate from SP in the column of Signature, and Qualification of Informant, and Residence if out of the House in which the Death occurred, it has Ernest F Cobb, Son & Inmate, Present.  Does this mean he was an inmate of a jail or is there another meaning.?  If he was in jail how do I find out what jail and what he was in for and for how long etc.?

Thanks

Hi

I seem to recall some other threads on this - not sure where they are at the moment but,  on death certs,  it just means that they were living at the same address as the deceased.

Thanks Gadget,

That clears it up for me.  Was a little worried, that we had some bad apples in my family tree.

The second link is the one that's most relevant to this - especially this posting:

That also answers a question for me. I recently found in 2 households in the census (in Scotland)  a non family member  listed as an inmate. I had thought this might have meant that they were being looked after by the family - sort of care in the community- but now I see that they must have been lodgers of some sort. Thank you.
