TIMBRELL 1861 LOOK UP BERKELEY PLEASE
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 08:36 BST (UK) »
Hi

I would be very grateful if anyone could track down William Thomas Timbrell, married to Sarah Dowell.  Their daughter Elizabeth would have been 3 in 1861.  I am 99.9% sure they were living in the tithing of Hamfallow, Berkeley, possibly Lynch Lane as in 1871 census.

IN 1871, Sarah's mother (I presume), Sarah Dowell, lived in Lynch Lane also, no husband, but son William.  Would be grateful for a check on her too on the 1861.

Thank you
Sue

Hi

Interested to read your post, albeit a few years after, regarding Timbrell and Sarah Dowell.

From a family letter to Sarah's brother Thomas:

....I went on purpose to witness if Timberell (sic) put the ring on right, your sister Sarah was married on the 12 of April 58. We all enjoyed ourselves very much we all wisht you had been one of our number but then that could not be. They all said there had not been such a pretty wedding here in Berkeley for many (a) long day. There was 3 cupple I have no doubt you will be surprised when I tell you your Uncle George Smith gave her away, only fancy, the very last person I thought of asking. We were all very glad with his company. I must say we cut a fine dash up the town, Timbrell & me Sarah and her uncle Rebecca & Philip Timbrell. So we were the tall ones. I have sent you a bit of cake...

Cheers

Geordie

Hi Geordie

Thanks very much for your post - what's 5 years in genealogy terms anyway - just a mere dot on a timeline :).

I love it when a bit of social history turns up.  Are you researching the Dowell side then?

2 things struck me and made me smile - I'm 5 foot 10 - perhaps that's where the tall side of the family comes from.  Secondly your ident - on my second week of owning chickens who just laid their first eggs two days ago!!

Hope you don't mind me adding the text from that letter to my family tree!

Many many thanks
Sue

' morning Sue

Yes, I'm on the Dowell side - a great-grandson of Thomas Dowell, eldest brother of Sarah (Have a gander at the Gloucester Docks website and look for Dowell Family links to the goldfields)

And you...a direct line from the Timbrell-Dowell marriage?

At 5'10" shall I call you 'Lofty'?...there were some tall-ish sons of Thomas, but not my grandfather. I don't think Tom himself was tall.

Ahhh the 'Percy Chookhouse' name...there lies a story! So, omelette, scrambled or poached

Yes, please use the text of the letter. It was from Sarah's aunt - Elizabeth Smith to Thomas Dowell May 9th 1858. Elizabeth was a sister of Sarah Dowell nee`Smith.

Am new to this chatroom stuff...so still a few things to get my head around.

Cheers

Geordie

Hi Geordie

Sarah would have been my great great grandmother.

Clara Timbrell, my grandmother, died before I was born.  She was the daughter of William Thomas Timbrell (son of Sarah and W T Timbrell) and Mary Groves.  This section of family moved to Harrow on the Hill, nr Wembley and thence to Willesden.  Unfortunately I have not been able to track down Mary Groves birth although there is plenty of evidence for her family!

You'll soon get to grips with forums!

Must say I have been letting family tree lie for a while - I've been busy collating my dad's photo negatives (photographing them all and turning into positives) in the hopes of getting more clues and pics for my family tree.  Only another 550 to go! (he was a photographer - coincidentally died 4 years ago today) - oh and getting to grips with chickens.

Hi, hope you may be able to help. Although my search is not directly related to Berkeley. I am trying to clarify a marriage. I am related to thomas timbrell (timbrill) (tembrel) christened in Cheltenham but worked in tewkesbury, probably apprenticed there. I have him marrying a Betty Parsons (from Bushley nr Tewkesbury) around 1825. Another researcher has him married to an Elizabeth James in 1821 ( from Charlton Kings, nr Cheltenham). all the census refer to Betty b 1799/1800 which fits mine as Elizabeth is b 1803. Do you know anyone who maybe able to clarify which wife! both are reasonable or have  you come across this family in your research. hope you can help. Renu

Hi Renu
Don't think they are connected with my Berkeley side so not sure I can be of much help.   Can see a couple of Thomas Timbrells in the census - if Thomas was from Tewkesbury I'd go with Betty Parsons. There is another Thomas living Charlton Kings who seems to be widowed in 1861, living alone but not marked as widowed in 1851.  There is an Elizabeth Timbrell who died in Cheltenham 1838.

Thomas married to Betty was a Shoemaker.  Thomas married to an Elizabeth in Charlton Kings was an Ag Lab - that will be significant.

Thomas the shoemaker died 31 July 1871 and there is a will - it may be worth getting hold of that to see what it holds.

Hope that gives a few clues.

Just a little to go on but not much.

Sue
