Hi spendlove,
Many thanks for the information you have sent - the period that I need is before these registers started in 1813.  If there was no church in Brimington before 1813  - which parish in the area would people use to have their children baptised?  If the church was there before 1813  have registered been lost or destoyed?

Hi,
It would appear that Brimington was only a chapelry of Chesterfield.

So you need to look at Chesterfield or Whitington see the history of Brimington:-

I have the Brimington Parish Registers CD which starts in 1813 and on the back it says that the earliest registers have not survived.

Thank you for letting me know about Brimington parish registers pre 1813 - I had thought that they had either been lost or badly damaged so were unreadable. Thanks for letting me know.

That's a disappointment.  My gg-grandmother Helen Heywood was born in Brimington in 1816, daughter of John and Ann (from IGI).
I have good reason to think the family had lived there for several generations, and was looking forward to searching the earlier registers when I had the opportunity. Perhaps there's still a chance they were recorded at Chesterfield, the Record Office guide isn't very specific.  (I see Brimington wasn't registered for marriages until 1833, so Brimington brides will have been married at Chesterfield from 1754 until then, at least those records will have survived.)

Could you possibly do a quick Brimington look-up for me? I know Helen's father John died in 1840 but I don't know about her mother Ann(e) Heywood, except it must have been earlier, and after 1816.

Ann Heywood was buried 3 September 1832, 55yrs, wife of John.  Hope this helps.

I don't know if your CD says when the earlier records (which haven't survived) dated from, but it may not be that far back. The Lichfield Record Office guide says that they have the bishop's transcripts for Brimington from 1800, so there may not be too many years missing from the registers (although there are gaps in many of the BT series, I wouldn't think that, say, a hundred years' worth of BTs had gone missing - it's usually single copies covering 3-5 years that are missing from longer runs). I suppose you'll just need to check the St Mary & All Saints (Chesterfield) registers and see if your ancestors appear.
