Postcards- Orcheston

I am trying to piece together the history of my village. If anyone has any postcards or any information about Orcheston in Wiltshire, UK I would be very grateful

You may find info on your village's history if you go to Genuki site and then to the link to Wiltshire.
Another source of info could be a Wilts Library near Orcheston. You could email them and ask for help.

I have over the years managed to find two or three but we are a very small village and as postcards have been losing popularity for quite a few years now they are becoming difficult to find. Whenever I am anywhere where there is an antiques sale I look for them. The people running the stalls often look at me as if i am made when i ask, shaking their heads as they have never heard of the place.

I just thought there may be someone somewhere with one hiding away in a drawer.

Specialist postcard fairs and dealers are a good place to look for postcards of small villages. The following link may help:

The Wiltshire an Swindon Archives in Chippenham and Salisbury Reference and Local Studies Library may have photographs which it may be possible to copy.

Dear Polly Ann

Just seen your note re Orcheston postcards

I have one or two, plus a mass of research on Orcheston (more especially Elston, where I live) and would be happy to pass it on to anyone who is researching the history of the village, plus any images of postcards and photos.

But, a warning, what I'm talking about is fairly intense (even desperately boring) stuff! And quite a lot of it. Can you let me know what you are researching - the whole of the history or a particular aspect - and if you ever have any idea of publishing it? I'd love, one day, to see a history published, but not overly keen on being seriously involved in the donkey work!

You are welcome to give me a call, out of office hours would be best, if you want.

Hi Richard

Thanks so much for replying. You will know me, Maureen Harnett from Orcheston I have been doing some research on various things and completely forgot that you would have a load of info. Perhaps we can meet up and swop what we have.

I am really new to this and the instructions I read said don't use your own name so I didn't.

The reason Istarted doing Roots Chat was because I came across a site set up by someone in Australia seeking information about the Lowther family.

I am also trying to trace the background of the five men named on the WW1 memorial in St George's.

I also think it would be great if the history of those buried in both churchyards could be researched.
