If you're coming into Normanton from the M62, turn right at the lights at the top of the hill. The Police station is then on the left and the old Methodist church is in front of you.  On the right of the church is a more modern bungalow type building. That's the Bereavement Service office. There is parking directly in front of the building.

Good hunting.

If the burial records gives a section ref this map may help narrow it down. It should be noted that if your relative is in the old cemetery which is on the left, not the right as noted before then the grave registers showing who is buried in each ply is lost.http://www.yorkshireindexers.info/wiki/index.php?title=Castleford_Cemetery

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello, i appreciate this is a very old subject, but wonder how you got on with your search in the Castleford Old Cemetery? My GGGrandfather is buried there, plot 3819W. There is also a photo of the grave on Findagrave.com. I visited the old cemetery today to look for it but could not find it, and can't find any way of getting a plot map. I contacted Bereavement services a few years ago, but got no response. So wonder of you managed to find the grave you were looking for?
Thank you

Good to hear from you! It certainly isn't an easy cemetery to find your way around.
I can happily report that I did eventually find the grave I was looking for, but not by the means I had expected - I happened to be sitting with an elderly family member whilst the rest of the clan ewent to a family funeral, and we got to talking about family. The old chap was struggling with early dementia and just happened to be having a particularly lucid time. After telling al bunch of family stories, I told him that I was having trouble finding the grave and he instantly gave me very precise instructions from the roadside.
Whilst I wasn't convinced that his recollection was accurate, I tried it out, and he was sopt on!
Sorry, I can't be more help with your struggle. Maybe it's worth another call to bereavement services?
Best regards.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm glad you got lucky and your search was successful. I've known my great great grandad was buried in that cemetery for a few years, but hadn't looked because i had no idea where in it he was, or if he even had a headstone. Then i suddenly found findagrave.com had been updated with a photo, i thought my luck was in. So i went this morning to look for it. Very frustrating. I just wish there was a record of plots somewhere. I only live a few miles away so at least i didn't travel far. Ah well. Hopefully I'll get lucky next time. Yes, will try Bereavement services again. Thank you.
Regards.

Hi,

I don't know if this is of any help to you but that number would usually suggest a burial in the old cemetery since the burials in the new cemetery usually have a letter at the start. The old cemetery is the first gate on the left as you approach from the town. That was the first one then the New Cemetery is across the road and the Extension (newer than the new cemetery) is next to the old cemetery. I'm afraid I can't give any help as to the actual location of the grave within the cemetery as comparing the stones of my family members who have gravestones in there with the numbers of their graves in the registers doesn't seem to make any sense at all. If you'd be willing to share the surname I could let you know if I remember seeing a stone with that name on.
