Did John go to Oz???
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 11:00 BST (UK) »
A lady has got in touch with me asking if John Williams who is in my tree went to Australia? He was born in 1837 in Burghill, Hereford but I wouldn't know where to start to see if he went abroad?

I have him on the 1891 living with his wife and niece and his trade is Stone Mason. But would he of travelled who knows?

Any hep would be appriciated as I have no idea where to start  :-\ :-\ :-\

Kind regards,

Tyrone  ;D

Are you saying that you found him on the English census of 1891?

Lists of passengers to Victoria, Australia can be found on the PROV site, and looking at Assisted Passengers there are 37 John Williams who might be yours - their ages are given, also the years of sailing, so you can do a calculation to see if any of them fits.  http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes/index_search_results.asp

There are also Unassisted Passenger lists, with 13 John Williams
You could try other state records, too.  If you find someone who fits the age, why not put a query on the Australia page here and see if someone can follow that person up?

Good luck with your search.

Hi Gill,

Thank you for the info. I have been looking at the census records and I believe this is the wrong John Williams the lady was looking at. I have him right through to the 1901 census and I believe I found his death in Hereford at the age of 68/69 so I dont think this is the ladies rellie.

I shall ask a moderator to take the topic down as I believe we have cracked this one!

Kind regards,

Tyone  ;D

John is still around (age 74) in 1911.

Hi Ivan,

hmmm I thought he died...lol I didn't look at the 1911 census to see if he was still living. Thanks
