Lookup for William Newman and Maria Mundy b. 1833 in Hampshire
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 00:13 BST (UK) »
Hi there
I'm not having much luck finding out this couples parents and where in Hampshire they were born or lived until they moved to Australia.

The details i have so far are:

William Newman b. 1 Jan 1833. Hampshire.  m. 1857 in Hampshire. Travelled to Australia with his wife in 1857 on the Ship Zemindar. d. 28 June 1920 Dungowan NSW, Australia.

His wife:

Maria Mundy (could be Munday?) b. 1 July 1833. Hampshire. d. 16 Jan 1918 Tamworth or Inverell, NSW Australia.

Any help to fill the gaps would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Natalie Newman

There was a Maria Munday christened on the 14 JUL 1833   Crawley, Hampshire, England Parents James Munday , mother Mary. Nothing for Willaim that I could locate.
A search of the 1851 census may provide more details.

Hi Natalie

William and Maria married in the Stockbridge area - the reference would appear to be 2c 103 Stockbridge Mar qtr 1857.

If you order the certificate, you will find both their father's names and some idea of exactly where they lived in Hampshire at that time.  This should enable you to work backwards via the 1851 census to their baptisms.

Good luck

Nell

Thank you Nell
I was wondering how i would go about purchasing their transcript - i'm in Australia.

Would this be the best way to get the most info on both of them?

thank you

natalie

Hi natalie,

Well, you could go straight for the 1851 census look-up, but may be led astray if there is more than one possibility in the Stockbridge area.  However, I would have thought that Munday was not too numerous.  Without knowing the parish they married in, you may be involved in a search over a wide area.  The marriage certificate would definitely give you their fathers' names and occupations, the couple's ages if you are lucky (rather than just "of full age") and where they lived.  It may just be the village they came from rather than an exact address.  You can order the certificate online at:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp

Make sure you read the FAQs section if you decide to go ahead with this.

Good luck

Nell

Hi Nell
Would you have a Transcript service where you can get the info without actually buying the certificate original?
Here in Australia it tends to be half the cost and the same info. It is something that only people with a licence can access and they charge the public a price thats generally half of the original cost.

thanks

natalie

:(  Unfortunately not.  The GRO registers themselves are not open to scrutiny by the public.  That's what we English & Welsh all complain about.  That's how we all manage at some point to order the wrong certificates! Parish registers can be seen at the county records offices, but you need to know which church before you start.
