Was Janes his real name?? Do you have the Marriage certificate to see fathers name?

Hi Pam, this could be the one. On the court records in Australia it states that Jabez Janes was a plasterer, among other things. The marriage to Maria could be one of his wives. He states that he married another Maria, Maria Goldsmith in Melbourne in 1854 but we have never found a marriage cert. Thanks for your help Deb

Hi again Debbie,
-   Jabez Janes was age 45 yrs and Maria Ann Goldsmith was 34 yrs on the birth of their daughter Emily Sarah Janes in 1867 at South Melbourne.  Making his record as born in Hampshire England in 1822.  Jabez & Maria had 6 children that I have records for.

My grandmother and wife of Charles Roberts was Clara Jane Janes who married age 17 yrs old  in 1874 at the Presbyterian Manse, Williamstown,  Her father was listed as Jabez Janes, Plasterer, and her mother, Maria Ann Goldsmith. 
is your Grandma Emily Sarah Janes  a Johannesen who I have contacted before thru ancestory.com??

is there any record in 1841 Census or earlier of a Jabez Janes born Bremore Hampshire in or around 1820-22?  Are there records of his parents names or marriage or siblings please. any help would be appreciated.. thank you, Margot in Melbourne.

I've looked for the baptism of Jabez in Hampshire and not been successful.

The only possibilities for Jabez Janes/James/Jones in 1841 are not in Hampshire - or Berkshire for that matter.  There is a Jabez James in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire with parents William & Leah and he was born in the county.  His and his siblings' births are recorded in the non-conformist registers, but there is a record on the FamilySearch site.

The marriage certificate from 1843 would be helpful in establishing his father's name.

thanks Little Nell for looking for me Jabez Janes.  He is a mystery to us, I can't find his death either in Victoria.  all we know is that he came to Australia and was supposed to have married my great grandmother Maria Goldsmith in 1854 in Victoria and they had 5  children and in 1870 he was charged with deserting Maria and their 5 illegitimate children. I was hoping to find more about him as to why he did not marry my great grandmother - then thinking he was already married in 1843 to Maria Cooper in Hampshire. do you know if Maria Cooper when his wife as Maria Janes died before he came to Australia in 1854..? thank you, Margot in Melbourne.

Sorry, I've no idea if his wife died before he went to Australia.  At the moment I don't see how anyone can take this forward without checking if that 1843 marriage is for him and if so, who his father was.
