Hi Linda
The fiche you get from the ERO have images of the original documents. The ESFH CD's are probably indexes/transcriptions. OK for basic searches, but there's nothing like seeing the real things!

My Ingatestone fiche only start in 1813, so I can't help you before those dates. SEAX has Ingatestone covered from 1558-1732 where you can view the original images, but for the missing years, you'll have to buy the fiche.

Robert was certainly married before (the widower status says that) but I've looked at the marriages from 1813 in Ingatestone and have drawn a blank on that as a location/timespan.

Here's another thought for you...Although you see a Robert Pettitt with an Ann in 1841, on the 1851 Ingatestone census, there's an Elizabeth Pettitt, widow aged 60 and as we know Robert and Elizabeth married in 1825!

I think you have much investigating to do and many false leads to dodge.  ::)

Best Wishes
 :D

Hi,

I expect she is Elizabeth Ann or somesuch!!  My other Great, grandmother on the Adkins side is Emma Key and her mother is Ann Charlotte and she varies her  names each census!!

Regarding the CDs, if you scroll down to the bottom of the link it says they no longer sell fiches and as I think I said they don't do a CD yet of the areas I want.  I must say ORO are very good, they have loads of CDs, but obviously I don't need them, living so close.  I know Nigel (I expect you know of him, he uses this site a lot) has bought some and he finds them very good.  He is my 4th cousin and we made contact through Genes Reunited :)

Do you by any chance have a fiche of Tendring/Clacton area, because
I enquired on Genes as well yesterday about the Pettits and got a reply from a chap called Ian.  He had no details before Susan and James. I hope you don't mind but I passed on the info you gave me about Susan's baptism and her parents marriage.  He then got back to me and asked about the 4th child in my father's family.  Now  I had no idea there was a 4th child until yesterday :o :o  He thinks it may be a George who was born and died in 1897.  I have no idea why this child was not mentioned.  Maybe there was something wrong with him.  As I said my grandparents were related and Mum's mother was horrified when she found out, she thought we would all be idiots - well nuff said ;D

Sorry to be a pest, I think I may have to have a trip to Chelmsford sometime or go to Kew (never been there, I hear it is an awkward place to find)

Thanks for all your help,

Regards
Linda

Hi Linda

No, sorry, I haven't got Clacton/Tendring fiche.

If you do go to Chelmsford R/O, plan your visit with military precision with a "to do" list. Time goes by at about triple speed in a record office, so every minute is precious and needs to be used wisely!

I always recommend checking for yourself everything you are told by anybody else before putting it on your tree, especially if they're a "Genes" contact.
A lot of time and effort can and has been wasted because of errors passed on by well meaning but not so careful folk!

Happy Hunting
 ;)

Hi,

The forth child was a matter of simple maths on the 1911 census (the caveat being that they had not lied on the census!), four born, two still alive. But as this child wasn't on any census's and the parents moved about a lot. It was going to be difficult to pin the forth child down. There second child was born in Clacton, there was one other Adkins born in a 20 year span in the tendering area (the following year!), that child also died in the same quarter. So I would suggest that would be a very good starting point, you have to start somewhere and work through the possibilities.

My very best regards IAN.
