Look up for Robert PETTIT
« on: Sunday 13 June 10 16:36 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the wife of Robert PETTIT, the father of Susannah ADKINS, my great-grandmother.

She was born at Ingatestone around 1824.  So far I have her living in Haverill in 1841 and what I think is her parents living in Ingatestone.  If this is correct, her mother's name is Ann.

Is there anyone around that area who could look up Susannah's christening and possibly her parent's marriage? I live in Oxford so bit of a trek down to Chelmsford!!

I'm willing to look up anything in Oxford as I live very near the Oxfordshire records office

Linda

Yes, she was married at Fryerning on 15th feb 1846.  Her father is given as Robert Pettit - labourer -(how unusual!!)

Hi Linda

I think this is the information you are looking for;

Baptism, Ingatestone 16th October 1825
Susan Armstrong Petit daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Petit. Labourer.

Marriage, Ingatestone 18th December 1821
Robert Petit OTP Widower
Elizabeth Turner OTP Widow

Both Marked with a X.
Witnesses; John Boultwood & ? Boultwood

There's a lot of Adkins activity too in Ingatestone.

If it's your direct ancestors, it may be worth purchasing the fiche from the ERO. A treasure trove of info.!

Best Wishes
 :D

Thank you so much!

I have been going round in circles for days trying to find that.  I am a member of EFHS.  I have  been looking at what CDs are available, I didn't realise you could buy fiche.  I presume I would take them to the Oxford records office to read them?

My maiden name was ADKINS, so yes I would find it very useful.  I have managed to do lots on Mum's side of the family as they all lived around here, but Dad's family are more difficult.  Both my parents are now dead, so I just have a few family stories to go on.  I know the ADKINS come from the Braintree area.  Does the fiche cover several areas or would I have to buy several?
My grandparents were both ADKINS (cousins once removed)  Grandma came from Shenfield.  So I have lots of ADKINS to find!

Thanks once again,

Linda

Hello Again

Glad I could help you. Each parish has it's own set of fiche at the ERO but for what you get and the amount of travelling they save they work out very cheap. Go on their web-site and have a browse around for how to order them etc. (SEAX).

By the way, there's a 15 year old Susan Pettitt, a female servant living in Ingatestone Street, Fryerning in 1841. I would have thought this was your Susan rather than one in Haverhill. (HO107/325/15).

Take Care.
 :)

Thanks again, I will investigate the fiches tomorrow.

I think the reason I didn't find that 1841 entry is because there are so many variations on the name.  She is definitely Susannah on her marriage certificate, but she signed with a cross so obviously couldn't check what the vicar had written! And so many versions of the surname too!

Just one other favour please!!  I though Robert might have been married before. due to his age in 1841 census (if that is him?  as his wife is given as Ann??) but I found a marriage on IGI of Robert PETIT to Jane WHEELER in Ingatestone - 18/10/1802.  Do you think this was his first marriage?

Linda :)
