Hindmarsh Family, Amble
« on: Saturday 12 June 10 21:34 BST (UK) »
Hi
My great grandfather, Mackenzie Hindmarsh, was born in Amble in 1861.  I was always told that he died in the London/Surrey area about 1899 but the only entry I can locate is for a death in 1915?

I cannot find a marriage entry for him with my great grandmother, Ada Bird, but do have one for her to Thomas Miles in 1905 - we have been told that this was her second marriage - but wonder now if they were married?

Would appreciate any insights.
Thanks
Wild Kiwi

Hi and welcome to rootschat
Did Ada marry Thomas under her maiden name of Bird or the married name Hindmarsh?    I can't find a marriage in 1905 for either.
Have you found Mackenzie in all the census records?  Looking at 1911 might find the one who died in 1915.  We can't do look ups for copyright reasons and everyone has to pay to look at the image but you can search the index free.

Hi Wildkiwi,

The latest available census seems to confirm that he was still alive (oops, sorry for echo Andrea)
www.1911census.co.uk

Does Ada marry Thomas Miles in her maiden name? Is she Adelaide Maud Bird who marries in Shoreditch? If so, the marriage has her down as a spinster.

In 1891 he is in Scotland so I suppose they may have married there.   Presumably you have a birth certificate for the child that you descend from.  Where were they born and when?
Andrea
Oh - perhaps not if Tati is correct.   (She usually is!)

I f only :P

I see Adelaide Maude Miles is living with sons Cyril and Ferdinand Hindmarsh in 1911. Back in 1901, she was shown as married (not widowed), surname Hindmarsh RG13/62 29 50

1905 marriage details:
1st October 1905, St Mark Shoreditch
Thomas Miles, 45, Widower, Commission Agent, 14 Peerless Dwellings, Father Georges Miles (deceased), Silk Dresser
Adelaide Maud Bird, 34, Spinster, 14 Peerless Dwellings, Father Charles Bird (deceased), Doctor
Witnesses Alfred Miles and Andrew John Dickson

She exaggerated her Fathers profession somewhat ;)

1881 Census
72 Worship St,
St Leonard Shoreditch, London
RG11/384/46/12

Charles BIRD, 38, Head, Mar, Medical Assistant, born Brixton, Surrey
Clarinda Bird, 30, Wife, Mar, born Walwoth, Surrey
Matilda Alice Bird, 10, Daug, born Walworth
ADELAIDE MAUD Bird, 9, daug, born Brixton
Herbert Edwd H Bird, 7, Son, born Walworth
Francis T Cranleigh Bird, 11mths, Son, born Shoreditch, Middlesex

A Family Tree has Charles and Clarinda marrying 3 November 1870.
There is no marriage reg that matches that.

Marriage;
Charles BIRD, March 1870, St Saviour, 1d 169
On the same page is Clara PURSLOVE

Death;
Charles BIRD, March 1885, Shoreditch, 1c 47, Age 42

Seeing your NZ connection are you descended from Herbert Bird who died in Upper Hutt?

Trish :)

Thank you to everyone for all your help.

Trish,
I think Herbert is the father of my Great Uncle Charlie Bird who we met a few times in NZ.
My connection is Ada Bird my great grandmother, who i did not meet although I believe she lived a long life.  She may well have been prone to exaggeration!
