The main reason why some people haven't been able to locate the record they are looking for is a result of what happened during WW2. The repository building used by the War Office in south London was hit by an incendiary bomb in Sept 41 (?) and a large number of records were lost or damaged, due not to fire but of the efforts of the firemen in putting out the flames. After the War the War Office put out a call to all Govt. departments that held any WW1 related papers, so that they could be placed in one centralized location.

There are about 3 million service/pension records on Ancestry, only those for 'ordinary ranks' being available - officer records are only viewable at Kew.

With regard to my own 'little' project I have located the records for 74 of the men named on Goole Cenotaph - including those of two brothers.

Regards.
I am researching the 452 names on Goole Cenotaph from the 'Great War'. Have located a number of official records, material and details from the Goole Times printed throughout the War years. In addition I have also obtained copies of photos & letters from relatives of those named on the Cenotaph. In addition I am also researching 280+ men who all had a connection with Goole and who also died, but who are not named on the Cenotaph.

My info comes from a site called Military Genealogy which I subscribe to. It has info on both World wars, the Boer War and Waterloo :)
